BBC presenter and North East native Lauren Laverne announces she is cancer free
by Chiara Fiorillo · ChronicleLiveLauren Laverne has shared an huge update on her cancer diagnosis and the future of her broadcasting career. The 46 year old radio DJ and presenter, who disclosed her cancer diagnosis last August after it was unexpectedly detected during a screening test, took to Instagram today to announce she's received the all-clear and is set to return to work on Tuesday.
Lauren, who was born in Sunderland, will be rejoining The One Show and has also been busy recording new episodes of Desert Island Discs for Radio 4. She's equally excited about her comeback to Radio 6 Music in the New Year.
Alongside a selfie wearing a sweater emblazoned with "Life is beautiful" and surrounded by get-well cards, Lauren wrote: "Well hello there! Just a quick update from me to say that after taking some time off to get better I've had the all clear and will be back to work on your TV this Tuesday with the wonderful @bbctheoneshow team. I've also been working on some new #DesertIslandDiscs episodes (which will air soon @BBCRadio4 @BBCSounds) and am looking forward to returning to @BBC6Music in the New Year."
"I want to say a huge thank you to the brilliant medical teams who took such great care of me, to the thousands of people who sent me such beautiful and encouraging messages, the friends and acquaintances who took the time to support me after going through cancer themselves - and most of all to my family: my two astounding kids and especially my husband Graeme, who was absolutely extraordinary throughout. It's been a difficult time but one that has taught me so much about what really matters.
"I can't say I suddenly regretted never having hiked the Inca Trail, more that I now see more beauty in ordinary things than I could have imagined, and feel more than ever that the small things in life - the connections we make and care we take with each other - are the big things really. I have so much to be grateful for and excited about, and that is thanks to everyone mentioned above. Loads of love to anyone going through cancer treatment or supporting a loved one through it. See you soon and thanks again for the well wishes. Xx", reports the Mirror.
Fans flooded her Instagram post with comments expressing their joy at the positive news. One fan wrote: "Marvellous news, will be lovely having you back on the airwaves again."
Another regular listener, Ayden from Folkestone, chimed in: "We love you Lauren. You look absolutely incredible and can't wait to welcome you back to the breakfast show in January! Let's make that first cloudbusting a huge one! ! Lots of love, regular listener, Ayden in Folkestone."
One fan beamed: "Best news ever Lauren! What a trooper. Can't wait to be listening to you again soon on Radio 6."
Meanwhile, another supporter wrote: "Fantastic. So happy you're feeling in the right place to start working again. Sending you love for a wonderful Christmas with everyone who loves you."
When revealing her cancer diagnosis, Lauren encouraged people who were "avoiding a test or putting off an appointment" to not delay any further and shared that she would need to take a break from her radio gigs and The One Show during her recovery. She commented: "It's usually my job to bring the good vibes on air but any you have to spare are very much welcome here. Sending loads of love to anyone in a similar boat, or who has made it back to shore."
