Princess of Wales extends heartfelt invitation to Southport stabbing survivors for Westminster Abbey carol concert
by Jordan Reynolds PA · ChronicleLiveThe Princess of Wales has extended an invitation to the young survivors of the Southport stabbing to attend her annual Christmas carol concert. Kensington Palace confirmed that Kate, who is recovering from cancer, has asked the children affected by the tragic incident to join her at the festive event scheduled for December 6 at Westminster Abbey.
This gesture follows a heartfelt visit she and Prince William made last month to meet with the grieving families in Southport.
During their discreet visit, the Royal couple spent time with the relatives of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, who were tragically killed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 in Southport. They also met with the dance instructor of the children.
At the Southport Community Centre, they engaged with the emergency responders who attended the scene of the attack and listened to their harrowing accounts.
Despite the health hurdles she's faced in what the Prince of Wales has termed a "brutal" year, the princess is determined to host the Together At Christmas service in 2024. Her participation in this year's carol service marks a significant step in her gradual return to Royal engagements following the completion of her chemotherapy treatment over the summer.
Earlier this month, Kate paid tribute to war veterans during Remembrance events, and the Palace has stated that she wishes this year's carol service to honour those who have supported others in times of need, highlighting the significance of love and empathy. "The service will shine a light on individuals from all over the UK who have shown love, kindness and empathy towards others in their communities."
The Palace commented: "This year, Her Royal Highness wanted to celebrate the many people supporting those in need – individuals who have inspired, counselled, comforted, and above all else shown that love is the greatest gift we can receive."
They further explained, "This theme takes inspiration from the Christmas story which encourages us to consider the experiences of others and the important human need of giving and receiving empathy."
This festive season will mark the fourth instance of Kate orchestrating her 'Together At Christmas' carol service, backed by The Royal Foundation. The occasion will be captured for a festive special airing on ITV1 and ITVX come Christmas Eve.
Leading figures of the Royal Family will partake alongside the princess as an estimated 1,600 guests assemble at the abbey in London to relish in musical renditions from acclaimed artists including Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean, and Gregory Porter. The invitees, whose selection stems from personal support offered to friends and family, as well as commendable work or volunteer contributions, are picks from charities linked to the Royal household and by the Lord Lieutenants, who act as representatives of the King within various UK counties.
Last year Kate and William’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis attended, along with Kate’s Middleton family.
