The Northern School of Art has been backing new talent since the 1870s
by Northern School of Art, Graeme Whitfield · ChronicleLiveWe’re very proud to sponsor the Newcomer of the Year category at this year’s North East Culture Awards.
The Northern School of Art has been offering specialist art and design education and training to creative individuals since the 1870s so has long been at the forefront of championing creative talent.
The School supports creatives at every stage of their development - from Saturday art clubs for 6-16 year olds and post-16 arts-focused courses right through to undergraduate and master’s degrees and our specialist employability and enterprise service. At our university-level campus in Hartlepool, our undergraduate and master’s degree programmes focus on providing industry-ready graduates to the creative industries.
Next door to our Hartlepool campus is The Northern Studios, the only large-scale TV and film studio complex in the North-East of England. A subsidiary company of The Northern School of Art, developed by The School in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council, and funded by The Tees Valley Mayor’s Office and Combined Authority the Northern Studios is a commercial company providing dry hire studio and production facilities to the screen sector.
The Northern School of Art’s Principal, Dr Martin Raby, said: “We need to keep nurturing and encouraging new creative talent in any way we can. For the past 25 years, the creative industries have been the UK’s fastest growing economic sector. Almost 2.3m people rely on the creative sector for employment and this is growing – the UK Creative Industry Council says we will need an additional 700,000 graduate level people working in the sector by 2030. Figures from the Department of Culture Media and Sport show that our home region, the North East, had the fastest growing creative sector between 2010 and 2020 (outside London).
“There are certainly opportunities out there for the emerging creatives that this award recognises and we are delighted to be supporting it and shining a light on their talents.”
