Scenes of a Bigg Night Out in Newcastle in 2010 with some rather fancy dress
by Barbara Hodgson · ChronicleLiveSome imaginative fancy dress costumes are shown off in the first two images of our latest pick from the picture archives for our Bigg Night Out series.
The series initially ran in the Chronicle every Friday between 1999 and 2012-13 featuring images our photographers had taken that week around Newcastle city centre, particularly the Bigg Market. And for many of our readers their online revival sparks happy memories of good nights out with mates. This week's chosen photos were all taken during November 2010.
So what else was happening 14 years ago? Well, music-wise, pubs and club were playing the likes of wor Cheryl's recent single Promise This from her second album Messy Little Raindrops, which was also doing well, alongside the likes of Rihanna's Only Girl (In the World) and JLS's Love You More. Susan Boyle's album The Gift was proving a hit too, while November also saw the release of Take That's Progress - their first album, since 1995's Nobody Else, to feature the band's original five, thanks to the return of Robbie William - and this went on to become the best-selling album of the year.
At the cinema, part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out that November; was warmly welcomed by fans and became number one film. Other new releases that month included Tangled.
As to what else happened during 2010, Newcastle United beat Sunderland 5-1 at St James' Park in a Halloween Tyne and Wear derby; Gateshead's 'Get Carter' car park was demolished and the famous cranes at Swan Hunter's Wallsend shipyard were dismantled, marking the end of an era. That was also the year that Prince William announced his engagement to Kate Middleton; David Cameron became the first Tory Prime Minister for 13 years and the rescue of 33 miners in Chile, who had been trapped underground for 69 days, was watched live on TV.
