Matthew McConaughey channels David Attenborough for dystopian horror game ‘Exodus’
The ‘Interstellar’ star introduces players to some ferocious beasts
by Ali Shutler · NMEMatthew McConaughey has channeled his inner-David Attenborough for a series of trailers promoting new dystopian horror game Exodus.
Exodus tells a “thrilling horror infused story about a dystopian alternative timeline of human history” and is being made by developers who helped create Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic while at BioWare.
“Having fled a dying Earth, humanity has found a new home in a hostile galaxy. Here, we are the underdogs, fighting our final battle for survival. You are the Traveler, humanity’s last hope,” reads the official description.
The game was first announced in 2023 with a trailer that revealed only a tiny amount of gameplay, so the response was muted. Now creators are really trying to dial up the excitement. Two weeks ago, they recruited actor Matthew McConaughey to narrate an eerie cinematic trailer that introduced players to flying space creatures called Mara Yama that captures prey, puts them through “immense psychological torment” before they’re “neurologically drained”.
And the creepy monsters keep coming, with McConaughey doing his best David Attenborough impression to describe things like The Awakened Bear, the axe-wielding Arkavir and The Koven, which are part-robot, part-animal slave-soldiers that serve the Mara Yama. There’s also something called The Awakened Raven which are specially trained birds, cursed by knowledge. “Ravens are problem solvers and humans, left to their own devices, cause problems,” McConaughey warns.
McConaughey also features in the actual game, which is set in “a universe where nothing is what it seems and foes are always watching you, lurking in the shady corners of your fears”, though his role is currently unannounced.

Exodus doesn’t have a firm release date either but many expect it won’t be released until 2026. Fan can keep up to date with Exodus’ development through a “founders program”.
Earlier this year, Matthew McConaughey said he was considering running for political office after previously toying with the idea of campaigning to become Texas governor.
