Jim Carrey isn’t retiring from acting: “I was talking about power-resting”

Jim Carrey isn’t going to retire from acting, despite his comments to the contrary from April 2022.

The actor told Access Hollywood at the time that he was planning on retiring, but while he’s had a quiet few years by his standards, he has now reprised his role as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Out on Friday (December 20), it will also see him portray Gerald, Ivo’s grandfather.

Meanwhile, he recently told ComicBook.com that he’d potentially be interested in playing the Grinch again, but only if he did it via motion capture. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe,” he said. “It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

In a separate interview, ComicBook.com asked him whether he’d be willing to work on a sequel to his 2004 comedy The Mask, in which he starred alongside Cameron Diaz. He said: “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.”

With regards to his previous comments about retirement, he told ComicBook.com: “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.”

About agreeing to return as Dr. Robotnik, Carrey said last week that he “needed the money.” He told Associated Press: “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”

When announcing his retirement back in 2022, he said: “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

In a three-star review of Sonic 2, meanwhile, NME wrote: “Sonic 2 is certainly a fan-pleaser and comes pre-loaded with a post-credits scene that hints at more action (and more game throwbacks) to come. Who remembers that dodgy first design now?”
