Terminally ill ‘Borderlands’ fan has played the new game and says it “amazing”
“I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out”
by Ali Shutler · NMEA terminally ill Borderlands fan has been able to play the “amazing” new game thanks to an online campaign.
Last month, Caleb McAlpine reached out to the Borderlands community after being diagnosed with late stage four terminal cancer. “I am a die hard Borderlands fan and don’t know if I will be around for Borderlands 4. Is there anyone that knows how to get in touch with developers Gearbox to see if there is a way to play the game early? Long shot but I thought I would try,” he wrote on Reddit.
A few days later, Borderlands boss Randy Pitchford confirmed they were doing everything possible to make it happen.
Now, McApline has shared an update. “So Gearbox flew me and a friend down first class [earlier this month]. We got to tour the studio and meet an amazing bunch of people from some of the devs of all of the Borderlands games up to Randy the CEO. We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing.”
“I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love and support and for helping in making this happen. It truly was an amazing experience and it was just awesome,” he added. Fellow Borderlands fans have also donated over £9500 towards his medical expenses.
“We’re deeply thankful to the Borderlands community for rallying around Caleb after he shared his story several weeks ago,” Gearbox wrote on social media. “His courage, strength, and determination are an inspiration to us all. Our team was honored to host him last week at our studio.”

“Caleb is cool – a legit gamer who knows Borderlands inside and out. I’m glad he got a chance to play,” added Pitchford. “I am praying he makes it to when we are done.” Borderlands 4 is currently penciled in to release at some point in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
In other news, Elon Musk is annoyed with the “woke bullshit” in video games and wants to “make games great again” with his new AI studio.
