BLACKPINK singer and soloist Jennie has opened up about how her K-pop training has influenced her approach to music.

In a new cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, the K-pop idol looked back on her career in BLACKPINK and discussed her upcoming solo album. In the interview, the singer shared that working on the upcoming record has helped her become more in touch with her artistry.

The singer described her upcoming record as a way of “bringing myself to the world for the first time”, yet still noting how “BLACKPINK Jennie will always be a part of me, but you will also get to experience this new side”.

“I spent six years as a trainee, and throughout that process, I was so focused on becoming a performer, I didn’t really understand the meaning of becoming an artist,” she shared. “If I’m doing hardcore choreography, I know that I’m not capable of doing that while I’m blasting sync, doing it live, looking perfect.”

“There’s all these different levels, volumes of energy that I have, but I only learned how to turn it up to the max,” she added, explaining that she has become more aware of what she is capable of, and how to use it. “For the first time, I’m learning, ‘Oh, this should go down a little.’ It’s almost like I’m doing it backwards.”

Elsewhere during the interview, the singer also spoke about her role in HBO’s The Idol last year. “Wanting to become a super pop star is something I could easily just tune myself into,” she said of her role as Dyanne.

Jennie also likened the series’ storyline to her own experience in the music industry, saying: “Having the idea of this evil person coming in and trying to manipulate, I’ve been in that world my whole life.”
