Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don has revealed the two basic exercises he does in order to keep his health fears at bay.

The gardening guru, who began hosting the BBC show in 2003 after taking over from Alan Titchmarsh, has admitted that his knees have started to feel the impact of a lifetime spent tending to garden plants.

Despite saying that they've 'decayed' over the years, the presenter has claimed that using rowing machines and weightlifting have helped to protect them, the Express reports.

The horticulture expert has insisted that he has no plans to stop his hobby any time soon, and intends to keep 'gallivanting' the globe with his 87-year-old book photographer, Derry Moore: “And we travel the world together. I fully intend to carry on gallivanting like that for as long as my knees will allow it," he told the Times.

While he has paid close attention to his fitness regime, the 69-year-old believes that he is fortunate to have been born in the era that he has.

Monty added: "Having said that, there’s never in the history of humanity been a better time to be in your seventies. We’ve had fantastic healthcare, a really good diet, by and large a freedom from the cloud of war that no generation ever has had.

"My parents died in their fifties, and when I was a child anyone who was 70 was old, anyone who was 80 was very old and it was barely heard of anyone reaching 90, whereas now it’s so common as to not be worth discussing.”

With passionate gardeners around the country tuning into his weekly episodes of Gardeners' World on BBC Two, they'll already be aware of his invaluable gardening advice. But, in one of the show's recent podcasts, he informed listeners of how they should handle the issue of 'unsightly' black spots on flowers this autumn.

The esteemed gardener said: "The only practical thing you can do is, don't water overhead. You can't stop the rain, but don't wet the leaves, keep the leaves dry," the Daily Mirror reported.

Monty was recognised for his services his to charity, broadcasting, and horticulture in 2018 when he was awarded an OBE. Having become a household name in the early 1990s when he presented BBC shows Holiday and Tomorrow's World having previously featured on ITV's This Morning.
