'Husband wants to name our daughter after a dog – I'm worried she'll be judged'

When naming a baby, it's important both parents agree on the moniker before it's made official on the birth register.

But while one mum-to-be wants her husband to 'have his moment' naming their daughter, she's worried his chosen moniker will negatively impact their child's life.

Taking to Reddit, she shared how he wants to name their daughter Ziggy, a name she and many other believe is better suited to a family pet. Seeking opinions, she said: "My husband wants to name our daughter Ziggy. I’m not opposed to it if it could reasonably be a nickname to a longer name, but husband doesn’t like that idea.

"I’m worried about how it might be judged (ex. On resumes etc) and would like our child to have a choice of a more formal name or use it as a nickname instead but all options I’ve tried he has not liked." While most users agreed the name Ziggy for a child is a 'tragedeigh', an online term used to describe a name that has been "deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than it actually is", others urged her to suggest names that could lend to Ziggy being a nickname.

One user said: "I'll be honest with you. I've met a lot of dogs named Ziggy, especially in the last couple of years." Another user added: "Ziggy is a cute nickname, but I can’t say I’m crazy about it as a name. Kids like "belonging", and one of the first things I’ve noticed as a Kindergarten teacher, is kids want something in common and names are usually the first thing they compare.

"For example, I have two girls in my class one is Anna Kate and one is Anna Katherine (fake names, but you get the idea) and they call themselves 'twins' and are BFF’s. One is a green eyed red-head and the other is an African American from Jamaica. But they’re twins because of their names."

A third user said: "My name is Elizabeth but my dad calls me Izzy and I love it because only he calls me that. I would of hated actually being named Izzy. I would love for your husband to have something special like that with your daughter. In the end, it’s the bond that the nickname creates that holds value, not the name itself."

Another user pitched the name Isabelle, suggesting its common nickname Izzy could evolve into Ziggy. While one more user said: "It's not a tragedeigh, but maybe a bit of a tragedy. I agree it would be better as a nickname. Perhaps her real name could be Zara or Zoe, with Ziggy as a nickname?"
