Oscar-nominated actor and Emmy-winning star Sterling K. Brown is reuniting with his “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman for a new thriller series.

Gone is the feel-good, family-friendly tone of ensemble drama “This Is Us”: Instead, Fogelman and Brown’s latest collaboration “Paradise” is pure murder mystery with a government conspiracy twist.

Brown plays a government agent who is questioned after the death of one of his neighbors. The official synopsis reads: “‘Paradise’ is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.”

James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin, and Percy Daggs IV co-star. Marsden has already been part of a quasi-legal series with meta documentary show “Jury Duty.” Meanwhile, Nicholson won an Emmy for her turn in detective show “Mare of Easttown.”

“Paradise” is executive produced by Fogelman and Brown, along with John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, John Hoberg, Jess Rosenthal, and Steve Beers. The series is a 20th Television production.

“Paradise” will debut with three episodes at launch, followed by weekly installments.

Brown previously told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson that “Paradise,” which was previously titled “Paradise City,” has a “topicality” given the election.

“There’s a secret service agent. That’s me, tasked with protecting the president of the United States,” Brown teased. “Then something goes wrong.”

He added of how he selects his roles, “[I want to] keep surprising people as much as I possibly can. I enjoy making people feel. […] I will go where the story is, where the best story is told, with wonderful creative partnerships. I’m happy to be in a place where I have choice. That’s a rarity in this business.”

Brown continued, “As an actor, it’s nice to have a job. I got a chance to do something artistically fulfilling, with a story that impacted people’s lives by virtue of seeing the character in their living rooms, to pay the bills, to be at home with my wife and with my two kids.”

Since starring on “This Is Us,” Brown has also appeared in “Biosphere,” “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul,” and “American Fiction,” for which he landed his first Oscar nomination. His past features also include “Waves,” “The Predator,” and “Black Panther,” plus series “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

“Paradise” premieres January 28 on Hulu. Check out the trailer below.
