ITV Coronation Street's Bernie star's secret role on ITV soap from years ago
by Joe Crutchley · NottinghamshireLiveCoronation Street viewers were left stunned after discovering that Bernie Winter, portrayed by Jane Hazlegrove, had previously appeared on the soap. Bernie made her grand entrance in 2019 as the mother of Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), Paul (Peter Ash), and Kit (Jacob Roberts).
Since her arrival as Gemma's mum, Bernie has been warmly received by fans and has certainly made a mark. The character has been at the heart of several major storylines, from dealing with Paul's battle with MND to various brushes with the law, Bernie has seen her fair share of highs and lows in Weatherfield.
Tragedy struck when her son Paul died in heartbreaking episodes aired last September, leaving Bernie and her family distraught. Jane Hazlegrove, known for her roles in Dinnerladies, The Bill, Doctors, and as Kathleen "Dixie" Dixon in Casualty, is no newcomer to TV drama, reports Gloucestershire Live..
However, few knew she had previously featured on Coronation Street. On a Facebook group dedicated to the soap, a fan shared a snapshot of Jane in a 1985 episode, surprising fans with the caption: "Jane Hazlegrove in Corrie (1985) playing as Sue Clayton.", according to the Liverpool Echo.
Fans were quick to express their surprise in the comments section, with one posting: "Aww my lord, she still looks the same."
Another chimed in, saying: "Didn't realise she is Bernie just watching Corrie from 1985."
One admirer shared their astonishment at how the star remained unchanged, commenting: "Hasn't changed at all."
Echoes of approval continued as another fan stated: "I think she is quite a versatile actress as I have seen her in many different roles over the years and good in all of them."
Reflecting on her resemblance to another celebrity, an observer remarked: "She looks like Paul in the face, even down to the dimples."
Beyond her acting career, Jane enjoys a blissful romance with Isobel Middleton, another soap opera favourite who has made her mark in both Emmerdale and EastEnders. The couple tied the knot in 2015, celebrating a relationship spanning over nearly three decades.
During an appearance on Lorraine back in 2019, the blonde actress gushed about her life with Isobel, expressing: "She's sensational, a really beautiful woman. I am very obsessed."
