Liam Payne final days of torment as new report claims tragic details
by Sam Cooper, Nia Dalton · NottinghamshireLiveA new report has shed light on the tragic death of Liam Payne, providing a poignant look into the star's concerns before his untimely demise. The ex-One Direction member, aged 31, met with tragedy last month when he fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A body was discovered in an internal patio of the boutique hotel shortly after 5pm local time, and it was confirmed that he had sustained "severe injuries which were incompatible with life". Witnesses and a police report filed subsequently suggest that Liam was trying to get out of his hotel room and had threatened to use the balcony as an escape route.
A bag found with his body in the hotel's internal courtyard seems to indicate he might have been getting ready to vacate the room. We now have more information about the worrying downward spiral Liam was in before his death, and the events that unfolded in his hotel room.
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Liam faced several challenges, with those close to him sounding the alarm. His publicist resigned, leaving him without professional support during a tumultuous period, and he was allegedly let go by his record label, Universal Music.
The Daily Mail reports that Liam was dropped by the label just days before his death, with an insider claiming: "Liam's advance was massive and he didn't recoup [it]. Out of all of the One Direction boys, Liam was on the wrong path musically.", reports the Mirror.
It is also reported that his second album release was postponed. A source has suggested that Liam's music career, which spanned eight years, may have seemed to be "crumbling" towards the end, leaving him "must have absolutely devastated him". This period also saw his ex-fiancée Maya Henry initiate legal action against him after she accused him of persistent contact.
Fans of Liam have shared haunting footage from his final days and moments as he interacted with them during his trip to Argentina. A TikTok video captured the star outside his hotel, where he appeared unsteady and commented, "That was a really big squeeze", while meeting fans.
In another moment, he is seen posing for a photo, then frowning and looking down.
Another video shows Liam asking the crowd for a 'pen' to sign an autograph, responding with humour when they say 'lapicera' in Spanish, joking: "I feel like you're trying to make me say something rude."
Despite the light-hearted moments, there are growing concerns that Liam was not in a good mental state and may have been losing control.
In a conversation in the hotel lobby, a woman named Rebecca recounted having a half-hour talk with Liam just hours before his death. She described him as appearing "desperate" for recognition, even announcing himself by shouting "I'm Liam" to guests waiting for the elevator.
Later, Liam returned to the lobby carrying his laptop. Rebecca recounted a disturbing incident, saying: "Suddenly he took the computer, shouted 'f**k this s**t mate! ' and started bashing the computer on the ground."
She described the singer's "out of place" actions that "shocked" bystanders at the "high-end" hotel, adding concern in her voice when she said she asked him if he was OK. She shared that his response was a grunt before he said, "But he just kind of grunted. Then he said 'I used to be in a boyband. That's why I'm so f**ked up'."
Rebecca then saw him get back into the lift, followed by a "British guy" who apologised to those present on "his behalf".
When he came back to the lobby, he fell, leading staff to aid him into the lift.
Amid growing alarm, hotel employees gained access to Liam's room with a master key to ensure his safety, even going so far as to remove a mirror from outside his door for fear he might break it. Moments later, a call was made to 911 by an employee, stressing that the singer was in a room with a balcony and they were worried he might try to "I don't know if the guest's life is in danger. The room has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something. Just send an ambulance, only an ambulance."
As things escalated, after the hotel staff had thought they left Liam alone safely, it appears he tried to leave via the balcony, a choice that would ultimately lead to his tragic fall. When discovered, his body was found with a leather bag strapped over his shoulder, a bag that wasn't with him when he first collapsed in the lobby.
Evidence suggests that Liam may have planned his descent in stages. A guest on the second floor of the hotel found a leather bag containing pills, a bottle of Jack Daniel's, and a note labelled 'for Liam' on their balcony.
It is believed by investigators that this bag, which was identified as belonging to the singer and not the one found beside his body, was lowered to the second-floor balcony as part of an attempted escape. Police have dismissed the idea of suicide, positing that the singer was likely in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness" when he fell.
The tragedy has also been connected to a substance-induced 'psychotic episode'.
Sources close to Liam, according to the US website TMZ, have described a consistent aversion he had towards being confined in hotel rooms, a sentiment that dates back to his time with One Direction.
In a 2021 interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Liam expressed: "My dad said it from day one - lonely hotel rooms, man - getting locked in that room is not fun when you've been exposed."
This dislike for confinement reportedly led to another balcony escape attempt in September, where he tried to leave a Florida rental property using a garden hose to lower himself from a balcony after his security team confined him due to concerns about potential drug use.
Substance struggles have been a recurring theme in the singer's life.
Liam had reportedly been free from drugs in the months leading up to his death, but it appears he relapsed into using narcotics and alcohol shortly before passing away. The preliminary toxicology report detected "alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants" in his system.
Detectives also found "what appeared to be narcotics, alcohol, destroyed objects and furniture" during a search of Liam's hotel room. Images claiming to show the interior of the room where Liam spent his last moments were verified by news organisations La Nacion and Clarin.
