by Alison Graves · NottinghamshireLiveTV presenter Stephen Mulhern has had to withdraw from hosting the Big Fat Soap Quiz this year following the death of his father. The entertainer, renowned for his roles on Britain's Got More Talent, Catchphrase, Deal or No Deal, and Dancing on Ice, is grieving after the recent loss of his dad, Christopher.
Although the 47 year old star, who started his career at CITV, typically keeps his personal life private, it was disclosed this week that his withdrawal from the show was due to his father's passing. This news surfaced amidst reports that Stephen had collapsed while dining out and was taken to hospital.
He was assessed by paramedics and, as a precaution, was transported from Sunningdale, Berks, to Frimley Park hospital nearby. A spokesperson for Stephen informed OK!: "Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful."
They added: "In addition he had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken in to hospital as a precaution. He is now back home recovering.", reports OK!.
Stephen, who is stepping down from his role as host of the Big Fat Soap Quiz following a personal loss, has often spoken warmly about his upbringing with his father Christopher in London's East End. The entertainer, whose career began in magic, was taught tricks by his dad while helping out at his market stall.
He has expressed deep gratitude towards his parents for their dedication, once saying: "I don't mean to sound soppy, but they worked so incredibly hard to bring up me and my two brothers and sister."
With fans curious about who will fill Stephen's shoes, it has been announced that former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay will take on hosting duties for the 2024 edition of the quiz. The show pits soap opera stars against each other, with team Corrie led by Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, and team Emmerdale captained by Mark Charnock, better known as Marlon Dingle.
The remaining members of their teams are still to be confirmed.
