Gogglebox's most controversial moment ever which sparked 92 Ofcom complaints
by Danni King, Peter Hart · NottinghamshireLiveGogglebox, the hit Channel 4 show that has captivated millions of UK viewers across more than 20 series, has not been without its share of controversy. The programme, which features families and friends reacting to television from their own homes, has faced numerous complaints to Ofcom over the years.
One particular episode in 2020 drew significant backlash, as reported by OK! Magazine.
During the contentious episode, the Gogglebox cast was shown watching a scene from the Sky Atlantic series "The Third Day," starring Jude Law. The drama unfolds in three interconnected parts and includes actors Naomie Harris, Katherine Waterston, Emily Watson, and Paddy Considine.
However, it was a harrowing scene depicting a child's suicide attempt that sparked outrage among viewers, leading to 92 complaints to Ofcom following the broadcast, reports the Mirror.
Social media users were quick to voice their concerns, with many arguing that a more specific content warning should have been provided. "Tonight's show should have had an explicit suicide trigger warning – 'scenes some viewers might find upsetting' really isn't good enough," one viewer wrote on Twitter.
Another expressed their disappointment: "Disgusted by your show tonight Gogglebox. Families bereaved by suicide trust you for lighthearted TV watching. No warnings. You have just lost four dedicated fans. You should be ashamed of yourselves."
A Gogglebox viewer expressed their dismay by submitting an Ofcom complaint, stating: "So I've just done my first ever Ofcom complaint about Gogglebox last night. That scene was so horrendous, distressing and so unnecessary on a light entertainment show. Suicide is such a MASSIVE issue and Channel 4 were completely wrong to show that clip. Shame on you."
Similarly, another fan called for sensitivity, saying: "Enjoying the new series but would have liked a trigger warning for the depiction of suicide in the episode tonight #Gogglebox," while another added: "@Channel4 really should've put a trigger warning on today's #gogglebox."
Last year, Gogglebox faced criticism with nearly 100 Ofcom complaints after Joe Kyle's forthright remarks during King Charles' Coronation broadcast, where he said: "You can stick your Coronation up your a***."
leading to 88 complaints.
