'One of the best murder mystery films ever' is on free TV this weekend
by Peter Harris · NottinghamshireLiveThis weekend, the 'wildly entertaining' film Knives Out will be available for free on TV, with a sequel soon to hit Netflix. The film, hailed as one of the best whodunnit murder mysteries ever brought to the big screen, will be aired this Saturday (November 23) at 10.25pm on Channel 4 and Channel 4 HD.
Released in 2019, Knives Out was written and directed by Rian Johnson as his follow-up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film's success is undeniable, both critically and commercially.
It grossed over $300 million at the box office, received nominations for a BAFTA, Oscar and Golden Globe in the Best Original Screenplay category, and boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%. Daniel Craig stars as renowned Detective Benoit Blanc, a role that contrasts sharply with his James Bond character.
His accent in the film sparked much discussion among fans, as he stars alongside future Bond co-star Ana de Armas, reports the Mirror. The star-studded cast also includes Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson and LaKeith Stanfield.
And keep an eye out for Frank Oz, famous for being the voice of Yoda, reports the Daily Record.
The film's official blurb reveals: "The circumstances surrounding the death of crime novelist Harlan Thrombey are mysterious, but there's one thing that renowned Detective Benoit Blanc knows for sure...everyone in the wildly dysfunctional Thrombey family is a suspect. Now, Blanc must sift through a web of lies and red herrings to uncover the truth."
Since its premiere, viewers have showered the film with acclaim, with an online comment reading: "Incredibly casted, and wildly entertaining, Knives Out is a fantastic murder mystery! The story is excellent and extremely funny. There are a lot of strong themes regarding wealth and privilege that are very well done. And above all, Daniel Craig is absolutely hilarious in this."
Another ardent fan wrote: "One of my best movies of all time. Definitely the best murder mystery movie ever. Must watch."
A particularly impressed viewer remarked: "This film is an absolute masterpiece. The storytelling is next level and the characters and their development is perfect. The twists and turns take the audience for a thrilling ride that never gets confusing. On top of that, it makes use of the classic whodunnit formula and completely reinvents it. I would recommend it to anyone."
Rian Johnson, the director of the original film, had already been considering a sequel when the first movie was released. He eventually signed a lucrative deal with Netflix for the distribution rights, worth $469 million.
As a result, the sequel, Glass Onion, premiered on the streaming platform on December 23, 2022. After a temporary halt in production due to a strike by the Writers Guild of America, filming has resumed on the third instalment, Wake Up Dead Man, which is expected to be released in cinemas next year.
Daniel Craig will be back to solve another mystery, joined by an all-star cast that includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington and Andrew Scott.
