Lizardcube Co-Founder Leaves To Start New Game Company
"my vision has been less aligned with the team"
by Ollie Reynolds · Nintendo LifeOmar Cornut, one of the co-founders of developer Lizardcube, has announced his departure from the company after his own aspirations and vision became less aligned with the wider team.
Lizarcube is known for its work on Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Streets of Rage 4, with Cornut and Ben Fiquet kickstarting the company out of a shared love of old Sega licenses. Cornut states "I want to make games differently" and that he "didn't want to be swimming against the tide", prompting him to leave Lizardcube in the capable hands of Fiquet and the rest of the team.
He has now started another company by the name of Disco Hello and says that "there's a game that is starting to brew in my mind".
Fiquet shared Cornut's statement on social media and commended him as a "beautiful person", noting that although the pair are now on different paths, he will always cherish the time they had together.
Both Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Streets of Rage 4 have been met with widespread positive reception, receiving scores of 8/10 and 9/10 respectively from yours truly. Lizardcube is currently hard at work on its next project, though no concrete announcements have been made at the time of writing.

The Wonder Boy III Remake was wonderful and it's by far my favourite Master System game of all time. Streets of Rage 4 was also a thoroughly enjoyable sequel to an already great series. I wish Omar Cornut all the best and I'll definitely keep an eye on this new studio of his!
I wish him all the best.

Wish the best to both Omar with his new company Disco Hello and those still at Lizardcube!

Im a fan of Mr. Fiquet’s style and draftsmanship as it has been applied to Sega properties. I hope that’s Lizardcube’s future even after Shinobi releases because I feel they are carrying a section of Sega’s legacy that Sega hasn’t yet got sorted internally, and might not.
I'm looking forward to seeing his new game !
So it has been about 4 years since SoR4, and their third game had not really been discussed or talked about.
Chances are, that game may be seeing a lot of contention behind the scenes, and Omar is seeing the writing on the wall and left before something bad arises.
This pattern happens all too often.

@Zeebor15 Sometimes the parents just need some time apart (from the child that ruined their relationship)
Loved the art in both of these! Didn’t manage to finish Wonder Boy, got a little frustrated at the old gameplay, but it was a truly lovely remake. Would have loved to see a new entry with some more contemporary sensibilities added.
Best of luck to this guy, I shall eagerly await the next game announcement from both!
Article says he was called a “beautiful person” when the actual post that followed said “beautiful human” instead. Normally I wouldn’t be pedantic but you did use quotations.

Lizardcube is probably my favourite developer at the moment. I thought both Wonder Boy: the Dragon's Trap and Streets of Rage 4 were perfect, and was hoping to see many more Sega games revived to the same quality. I hope this style of game continues, whether it's by Omar or by Lizardcube itself.
@PinballBuzzbro - Is it, though? Cause my cursory search about their third game is still unannounced.
@MetalKingShield I agree! This studio has to be my favorite of all indies. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is the game that got me to return to video games after a long break. I tried it on a whim via Amazon Luna, and within a month I had bought a Switch and Wonder Boy, even though I had already completed it twice on Luna. To me, 8/10 is shamefully underrating how great it is (with the caveat that my tastes favor games like those from that era anyway). Streets of Rage 4 was another early Switch purchase, and again they nailed it. I hope Lizardcube can continue this direction. Check out their "projects" (pretty much some concept art) on their website--I think I'd buy any of those if they saw the light of day, especially "Garou – Mark of the Wolves 2". Best of luck to Omar and LizardCube both, and looking forward to Shinobi or whatever else they do!

Their Wonder Boy remake was magnificent. I had never played the original and had no nostalgia for it. It was their art style and music that drew me in. Afterwards I played the original and watched their documentary about how they made it and I loved it even more.
I hope both companies continue to make great games.
@Paraka I don't think it's officially announced, but the art sure is suggestive that it is, and it would be yet another remade Sega property, which certainly fits. There are a few places on the web that are reporting Lizardcube's ties to Shinobi as fact, though I don't know if any are more authoritative than the equivalent of some guy's blog.
I wish everyone the best and I'm always a fan of letting minds flourish. Good luck all.

Never heard of this game. After seeing the artwork, I started looking into the making of the game! I’m not going to play it, but I love looking at the art!
@timtimtim - I mean, it is a believable suggestion, sure. But I wouldn't sign off on it personally.
@Ogbert "Would have loved to see a new entry with some more contemporary sensibilities added."
They released one in 2018, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, it's available on Switch and uses the monster mechanic.
@fenlix didn’t someone else make that? I didn’t like the art in that one very much which was a huge draw for me in the remake. Also I didn’t realise it was a new entry.
