It's Over! Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp's Online Service Has Officially Ended
The paid version replaces it next month
by Liam Doolan · Nintendo LifeEarlier this week, you might have seen how Isabelle and the villagers said their goodbyes in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp on mobile devices. Well, in an update, the online service for the free-to-play game has now officially ended.
The game's social media account shared the following message and artwork to mark this occasion, while also noting how it hopes to see players return in the paid version of the game Pocket Camp Complete.
"Online service for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has ended. Thank you for playing. We hope to see you soon in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete!"
Players will now have to wait until 3rd December 2024 to access the paid version of the game. As we previously mentioned, it will also be available for an 'early discounted price' of $9.99 / £8.99 until 31st Jan 2025, and after this date it will be available for the regular price of $19.99 / £17.99.
So, that's the end of the online service for Pocket Camp! You can check out the 'Thank-You Finale' in our previous story:

I would like to the console version of Pocket Camp on Switch in physical release with every contents from the latest update.
Two different Animal Crossing games on Switch before Switch 2, why not?
One of my favorite games of all time. I will miss playing this version, but I am glad they are making an alternative way to play via Complete.

But will you still be able to earn Platinum Coins with this version? That's the big question here.
I do wonder if them making this complete version means Animal Crossing won't be a launch title.
Yep. It’s been shut down for 12 hours now, and I already miss it. I played way back at the beginning, then picked it back up a month ago when news about the Complete version came out - I wanted to evaluate if it was worth buying. Welp, I’ll be buying as soon as I can!

I didn’t think I would be so sad to see it go but today was very bittersweet. I’m glad they spent some effort on the past couple weeks with a celebration, though. Can’t wait to see what the new app brings!
Hmmmm didn't even know this was a thing. Looks pretty cool

I can’t believe they’re not making this a smooth transition from paid to free with this wait period. For a game that demands so much interaction, forcing a hard break is strange. Sure it’s only a few days but for folks who had and have a daily streak going, that’s going to kill momentum from your best players. Curious to see if there was any bigger player dropoff from this.

Sad to see this version gone even though luckily Complete is coming and yep, getting that as soon as it comes out since I've been enjoying Pocket Camp even more than other Animal Crossing games thanks to some of its exclusive mechanics - of course not the microtransactions, glad to see those gone (even though I've never touched them, only subscribed to the Happy Helper Plan)!

I never got to play much of this game, if I'm being honest. I love Animal Crossing, but there are so many other games that I would prefer to play that this one quickly fell off my radar.
Little side note: I recently discovered a VTuber by the name of Pumpkin Potion who actually worked on this game. She told a story about how DeNA convinced Nintendo to add microtransactions to the game, against the advice of the dev team, which she was a part of. I wonder what she would think about this complete version?

@JohnnyMind I recently discovered a VTuber by the name of Pumpkin Potion who worked on this game, and she told a story about how DeNA convinced Nintendo to add in microtransactions, despite DeNA apparently having a history of killing mobile games with microtransactions.
She and the rest of the dev team literally begged Nintendo to not do it, but Nintendo listened to DeNA regardless, under the notion that they could make some extra money from the game if they did so. That's when the shops, Leaf Tickets, and Fortune Cookies were added to the game.
Pumpkin Potion herself had to put out the tweet on Twitter expressing "excitement" about these features coming to the game, even though she was dying inside. But she had to put on a happy front because she worked for Nintendo. For that, she felt incredibly guilty about having to feign excitement about microtransactions coming to the game, and even apologized for doing so.
I don't know if her story breaks any NDAs, but I found it to be a little bit of an interesting story into the behind-the-scenes machinations of game development, especially for a company like Nintendo.

@AstroTheGamosian Interesting and yeah, like I've just said in another comment section no company is perfect just like individuals and that obviously applies to Nintendo as well so while we should absolutely praise all the good things they do we should call out the bad ones, too.
Hope Pumpkin Potion is happy that we're now getting this Complete version which gets rid of the microtransactions - as a player I definitely am (there are a couple of things I'll miss like being able to send gifts to others etc., but that's the price for having an offline version which is overall for the best as it will prevent this game to be completely shut down unlike unfortunately still way too many games)!
seems weird to have even a few days gap there between... if i were planning this id work in some overlap for retention.

I played this off-and-on, but I tried to play it pretty consistently for the last month, sending farewell gifts and such to the randomly enlisted friends that stuck with me all the way until the end of the sinking ship.
I plan to purchase the replacement standalone version in a few days.

I stuck around to the very end & I was sad to see it go. I'm glad that we're getting it back with some changes, even if I lose some long time friends who became inactive past the 30 days to years.
Can't wait for those leaf tokens & I hope they're super easy to obtain unlike their now defunct predecessor.
