Anne Hathaway has excited fans by confirming the return of The Princess Diaries, nearly two decades after the last film graced our screens. The US star first captured hearts in the original 2001 movie as Mia Thermopolis, a teen who learns she's the heir to the Genovian throne.

She shone alongside British icon Dame Julie Andrews, with Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, and Hector Elizondo also featuring in the stellar cast. "Miracles happen," Hathaway teased on Instagram, revealing the third film is on its way.

"Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues."

Now 41, Hathaway shared that Adele Lim, known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride, will helm the project, with Debra Martin Chase producing. Lim couldn't contain her excitement on Instagram: "SHUT UP! ! ! Here to celebrate the Queens and Princesses in all of us."

"Over the moon to be back in the Disney family."

Hathaway's own Somewhere Pictures will produce the film.

While we're still in the dark about the plot, anticipation is high that the third instalment will follow the charming path laid by The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
