A soon-to-be mum is standing firm on her chosen baby name for her son, despite the widespread backlash it's receiving.
Picking out a name for your new arrival isn't just about choosing something adorable for an infant, but also selecting a moniker suitable for an adult – after all, our monikers have a significant impact on how others perceive us.
Many parents spend countless hours mulling over the ideal name that fits their child at every stage of their life. One mother-to-be thinks she's nailed it with the choice of Damian for her boy, yet everyone around her "hates" the name.
The puzzled mother sought insight into the strong opinions by posting on Reddit: "First time mum and I'm having a boy. We decided on Damian but everyone I tell this to absolutely hates it LOL. I'm not gonna change it, me and my husband both like it, but I just don't understand why literally everyone hates it."
Her query sparked a flurry of responses on the platform as users weighed in on the name, with many highlighting the same cultural reference. A clear consensus pointed to the character's association with darkness, one user bluntly put it: "The Omen film series. Damian is the son of the devil, the anti-Christ."
Building on this point, another chimed in: "This. Damian will always be associated with this for me. Damon is close but loses the devil connection."
A third person echoed concerns others might associate the name Damian with sinister characters, leading the pregnant mum to share her frustration: "One of them did say that and I was like what [sobbing emoji]."
Another commenter disclosed their instant association: "It's 100% the Omen movies. I hear Damian and I automatically think of those movies and I've never even seen them. But it's a good name otherwise! Kids always make their names their own."
The discussion then turned towards why some names from horror films remain popular while 'Damian' is shunned, with a comment stating: "It's weird that 'Damien' is ruined but there's still Jasons, Micheals and Freddys. Heck I even know a Regan. Also in Rosemary's Baby, that baby was Adrian."
Meanwhile, someone who had considered naming their child Damian recounted: "My wife and I spoke about it as an option for our firstborn, but wrote it off exactly because of The Omen films. Damian is the son in the films and is the son of the devil. He's the anti-Christ.
"It's an older film, but seen by many and Damian = devil is a common connection to make. Since The Omen, Damian/Damien has been used as a name for "dark" or demon coded characters in a lot of media."
