STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW Creator Says the Kids in the Story Think the Jedi Are Fairy Tale Characters
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantStar Wars: Skeleton Crew is going to be doing something very different with the Star Wars franchise and it’s going to have a different vibe and tone than anything we’ve seen Lucasfilm do before.
The story follows a group of kids on a journey across the galaxy, and it’s been described as an 80s-style Amblin film inspired by The Goonies, which is very evident in the footage we’ve seen. It will also dive into these characters' perceptions of the Jedi.
During an interview with co-creator Chris Ford, we learn that the kids in the story think the Jedi are fairy tale characters.
He said: “We wanted to include the idea that these kids had heard of Jedi and tales of good versus evil in the kind of way in our planet we have fairy tales or King Arthur stories of the Knights of the Round Table.”
He continued: "We wanted to make sure we did it in a careful way where it didn’t feel like a weird meta thing. So, Wim and his friends, they know about Jedi, they’ve read Jedi stories, they even do a pretend lightsaber fight, but we were very clear we didn’t want to cross certain lines.
“Like when they pretend to do the lightsaber [fight], they make the wrong noise, because they haven’t seen the movies. They’ve never seen a lightsaber in real life.
“So, it was like finding ways to make it be authentic to the Star Wars galaxy… Like their toys aren’t from Kenner, they’re more like tin toys, like a little more old fashioned pre-commercialization kind of a toy."
I really love what they are doing with this! That will add an interesting layer to the story and it’s just a cool little detail that I’m glad that they thought of.
Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four kids “who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, crossing paths with the likes of Jod Na Nawood, the mysterious character played by Law.
“Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
The series was created by Jon Watts (Spider-Man) and it stars Jude Law,Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith. Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith.
The episodes in the show will be directed byBryce Dallas Howard, The Daniels, David Lowery, Jake Schreier, and Lee Isaac Chung. The Mandalorian's Jon Favreauand Dave Filoni will executive produce.
The film will stream on Disney+ on December 3, 2024
