KRAVEN THE HUNTER Is Projected to Bomb at the Box Office

by · GeekTyrant

Kraven the Hunter was originally supposed to be released in theaters in January of 2023. The release date shifted a few times before it finally landed on December 13th of this year, and when the film is released it’s projected to bomb at the box office.

The film is estimated to bring in $20 - $25 million with its opening weekend debut. This isn’t really a surprise, as Sony Pictures does not have the best track record with the non-Spider-Man Marvel movies that they produce.

Box Office Pro reports that "there’s a very real chance that Kraven‘s entire domestic run could fail to exceed even the opening weekend take of October 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance ($51M domestic opening, $128.8 domestic total after four weeks), the lowest-grossing of Sony’s three Venom films."

Yikes! This report comes a few days after Kraven the Hunter director J.C. Chandor implored fans to give his Sony/Marvel movie a chance.

He said: "Some of the fans out there, a lot of the fans, were upset with certain decisions and certain outcomes [of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe]. People have got to give us a chance and come out and support this film, and literally try to wash away some of the other stuff that’s happened. Give our film a chance.

"I think they’ll realize that we’ve done everything we can to give them a pretty fun story. You’ll see when the movie’s over, there’s potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it, and just tell a good damn story. And then we’ll have opportunities to do a lot of fun things."

As a fan of Kraven the Hunter, yeah… of course I’m going to give the movie a chance. I’m not expecting much, but I hope that it exceeds my expectations. The thing is, Marvel fans have been burned by Sony so many times with its Marvel movies that it makes sense that people won’t show up to watch this one in theaters.

Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, and Aaron Taylor-Johnsonstars as Kraven.

In Kraven the Hunter, Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff is on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world. Taylor-Johnson called the project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He excitedly proclaimed, “F**k yeah, it will be rated R!”

The movie also stars Ariana DeBose as Calypso, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, Fred Hechinger as Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as an unknown villain, Levi Miller, and Catch-22 star Christopher Abbott as the main villain, The Foreigner.

Kraven the Hunter movie in theaters nationwide on December 13th, 2024.
