Coronation Street confirms major change for Christmas episode - and fans won't be happy

Coronation Street has confirmed a big change to its Christmas Day episode.

The iconic soap, which is celebrating 64 years on the box this year, is a staple on screens at Christmastime. Over the years, fans have watched a ton of festive drama play out.

From shock deaths and cancer news to epic stunts and surprise returns, it’s rarely a peaceful time in Weatherfield at Christmas. And this year will be no different, according to new boss Kate Brooks.

Speaking to Plymouth Live, Kate shared that Christmas this year is “very fun” and “really lively” but warned that “lots of bombshells are dropped”.

The episode is also set against Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) potential wedding to Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson), but the boss teased: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”

Gail actor Helen confirmed earlier this year that she had left the soap after 50 years, with her final scenes airing over the festive period. But course, it would be a Corrie Christmas without some drama.

Kate shared: “There are lots of betrayals and lots of secrets are exposed.” However, there is one big change happening - and fans won’t be too happy about it.

This year, the soap, as well as Emmerdale, made their episodes available to watch first thing at 7am on ITVX each morning, ahead of their usual broadcast on ITV1 in the evening. But fans hoping to log on ITVX at 7am on Christmas Day to watch the Christmas episode will be disappointed. Instead of airing early at 7am, the episode won’t air until the evening.

Speaking more about the Corrie episode, Kate revealed that “it will feel very kind of classic Corrie with a bit of a twist”. She explained: “We are all in need of a bit of escapism at the minute. And we’ve had quite a dark and brilliant, few months on the cobbles. Christmas for us, is all about us trying to tap into the family dynamics of the Platts, what makes people tick.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
