Coronation Street boss 'devastated' as legend quits soap and reveals rule for exit storyline
by Joe Crutchley · PlymouthLiveCoronation Street’s new boss Kate Brooks has opened up about a soap legend quitting the ITV soap.
Actress Helen Worth, 73, shared her plans to leave the long-running serial drama in June this year saying it was the "perfect time" to leave. Helen made her first appearance back in 1974 playing Gail Platt - who quickly became one of the soap’s beloved characters.
The soap legend finished filming earlier this month, with her exit set to air over the upcoming festive period. And as expected, the news of Helen’s departure left soap fans gutted - including Corrie’s brand-new boss.
Speaking to Plymouth Live and other press, Kate Brooks teased what fans can expect from Christmas on the cobbles this year - revealing that is “very fun” and “really lively” but warned that “lots of bombshells are dropped”.
Kate also shared that it is set against Gail Platt’s potential wedding to Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson), but teased: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”
What’s more, the new boss also revealed “I’m devastated” when talking about Gail no longer being a part of the Coronation Street cast. Kate said: “I’m devastated that Gail is leaving. It really devastates me.
"Because she is so iconic. And I think that label gets bandied about quite readily, but it’s Gail! Fifty years, she’s been on the street, we’ve watched her grow.”
Talking about the ‘rule’ for Gail’s exit storyline, Kate said: “It was really important to make sure her exit and departure felt really fitting and in keeping with who she is as a character.”
Speaking about her departure in June, Helen said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.
“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
