Coronation Street fans 'work out' who's targeting Chesney - and it's a past soap legend
by Joe Crutchley · PlymouthLiveCoronation Street’s Chesney Brown is in danger as fans have ‘worked out’ who is targeting him - and it’s someone very close to home.
The soap legend, played by Sam Aston, has had a dramatic few months on the cobbles. As well as dealing with the death of brother-in-law Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), Chesney has also been struggling to make ends meet.
A father to five, Chesney has been working overtime to provide for his family and recently accepted more shifts at the re-opened kebab shop. This week though, things took a dramatic, and sinister, turn for Chesney.
In Monday’s episode (November 25), he took a trip to supermarket Freshco, and after being beaten to a parking space by a white van, a fuming Chesney blocked the vehicle in - before heading off to do his shopping.
When he returned though, he found his car was badly damaged, and the van speeding off. Back on the cobbles, the exact same van was seen speeding down the street. The van brushed against Chesney’s car and almost hit him. Lated, after talking about the ordeal, Chesney’s son Joseph heard him and soon feared the "van man" was out to get his dad.
Chesney comforted Joseph and reassured him that it was just a scrape and that nothing was going to happen to him. However, fans at home are certain that this is the start of a shock new storyline for Chesney.
What’s more, other viewers have ‘worked out’ who was during the van - and it’s a former soap legend. Reacting to the drama on a Corrie Facebook fan page, one person said: “I wonder who the driver of the van was?”
In the comments section fans shared their theories - with plenty thinking it could be none other than Chesney’s mum, and former resident, Cilla Battersby-Brown (Wendi Peters). One person said: “Bet it's Cilla driving the van!”
A second replied: “I hope so, always wanted her back.” A third chimed in and wrote: “His mum, Cilla.” Echoing their thoughts, another mused: “She could be out to get Chesney and blames him for Les’ death perhaps?" A fifth proclaimed" "Yes! Bring her back."
Cilla first rocked up to the famous cobbles back in 2003. Introduced as Les Battersby's love interest, Cilla soon became a hit with viewers. She was involved in several memorable moments, including the iconic scene that saw Cilla and Les (Bruce Jones) fall through their ceiling after dog Schmeichel invaded their bath.
But in 2007, soap fans were left gutted when Cilla said her goodbyes to the cobbles. A year later though, Wendi made a cameo appearance as Cilla Battersby in the soap spin-off Coronation Street: Out Of Africa. And in 2014, the character returned for a brief stint. But the loud-mouthed soap favourite has been absent from Weatherfield ever since.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
