A tragic crash in Bukit Mertajam has left a family devastated, as a young woman, Lee Zi Rou, was killed after her car was crushed by a container that fell off a trailer on Jalan Bukit Tengah earlier this week
The 21-year-old woman managed to make one last phone call to her mother in her final moments.
"Mummy, I'm in so much pain!" she uttered before her life was cut short.
The victim's mother, Lim Xiao Ling, 42, spoke to the media at the funeral home yesterday, 14 November, describing the painful details of her daughter's final moments. She recalled receiving the call at 9.24am.
In that brief, gut-wrenching conversation, her daughter said, "Mummy, it hurts," before letting out a faint cry and falling silent, according to China Press.
"I asked her where she was, but there was no response," Lim recounted.
In my heart, I knew something terrible had happened.
The mother said after the line went quiet, she repeatedly attempted to call Zi Rou back but received no answer
She then began retracing Zi Rou's usual route to work, calling her phone while searching in a panic. She eventually managed to connect with a man who answered her daughter's phone, informing her of her daughter's location and that she was trapped beneath the heavy container.
Reflecting on the tragic call, Lim and her three other daughters wept openly at the funeral home, overcome with grief. Lim shared that, upon learning her daughter's location, she rushed to the scene and arrived within ten minutes, but her worst fears were confirmed: her daughter had already passed away.
"I saw her in the car, and I kept pleading with people at the scene to help save her. But they said they couldn't move [the container]," she was quoted as saying by the Chinese daily.
"My daughter couldn't be saved. I really feel heartbroken," Lim said, adding that she was so overcome by shock and grief at the scene that she felt she could hardly breathe.
Since the incident, Lim says she has been haunted by her daughter's last words, making it impossible for her to find peace
"I can't let it go", she said.
"These were her last words. I kept hoping she would be saved because she still managed to call me."
She admitted that she had felt a premonition when the call came in, as she had often reminded her daughters not to call her unnecessarily and to message her instead if they needed anything.
"When I got her call yesterday, I felt afraid," Lim shared.
Zi Rou was the second eldest in her family, leaving behind an older sister, Lee Zi Qi, 24, and two younger sisters, Lee Zi Qing and Lee Zi Ying. The tragedy has left her family and loved ones in deep mourning.
The fatal incident involved three cars and two lorries
A male victim, aged 25, was pulled out of his vehicle by members of the public before the fire department arrived. Bandar Perda Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Mohd Nor Azamuddin Abdullah said firefighters used special equipment to extricate Zi Rou, who was trapped in her vehicle.
Azamuddin said she was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
