Velu inspects flyover work, library

Damage to bridges during flash floods is unavoidable, said Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu.

After inspecting the flyover under construction at Goripalayam here on Monday, he told reporters that though bridges across rivers were constructed after assessing water flow and its nature, sudden floods could damage the structure if the quantum of flow is very high.

“If we prepare Detailed Project Report (DPR) to withstand heavy flood, the cost would go four times more than what is allotted now. Spending such a huge money is not feasible,” he said.

On Goripalayam flyover, Mr. Velu said that 25% of the works had been completed and it would be thrown open by next December.  Regarding Melamadai flyover, he said 32% of the works had been completed and it could be expected to be opened by next August.

While visiting the Kalaignar Centenary library here, he said, ”I saw many people using it. There is a need for more space. We have planned to build a separate three-storied building on the same premises. Once it is approved by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, works will start,” he added.
