The longest flyover on the Ramanattukara-Vengalam stretch of the Kozhikode bypass road will open at Palazhi Junction in a few weeks. It aims to address recurring traffic snarls on NH-66 near two cyber parks and a shopping mall.

One side of the 690-metre-long flyover is now open to traffic following a review of completed works by Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas. The Minister said on Wednesday (November 27) that the cooperation of residents, traders, motorists, and Public Works department (PWD) officials had expedited the project.

PWD officials said the opening of the flyover would significantly improve traffic flow on the bypass road. They added that the six-lane road development on the Ramanattukara-Vengalam stretch was expected to be completed by April 2025.

With growing traffic congestion at the spot during weekends and festivals, traffic police had to deploy many officers for extended hours. Emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire engines were often stuck on the road.

“The worst affected were those travelling to the Kozhikode International Airport on Sundays. Many passengers often clashed with motorists who caused moving bottlenecks,” said Sivadasan Vayalil, a taxi driver on the route. He added that the flyover had been a long-pending demand seriously pursued by representatives, Ministers, and officials.

Police sources said modern signage systems and road markings would be implemented once the six-lane work on the Kozhikode bypass was completed. For safety, additional speed detection cameras would also be installed at identified spots along the route.
