Kannur University V-C seeks explanation over NewsClick Editor’s presence at Literary Festival
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduVice-Chancellor of Kannur University Professor K.K. Saju has sought an explanation from the director of student welfare regarding the decision to invite NewsClick Editor Prabir Purkayastha as the chief guest for the inaugural ceremony of the three-day Kannur University Literary Festival (KULF). The event, organised by the Kannur University union, concluded recently on the university campus.
Initially, film star Nikhila Vimal’s name was announced as the chief guest for the inauguration. However, Mr. Purkayastha was invited at the last minute, a change that the Vice-Chancellor claims he learned about only on the day of the event.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Saju said he was not informed about the change and cited health reasons for his absence from the ceremony. However, speculation suggests he deliberately stayed away to avoid potential controversy.
In May, the Supreme court invalidated the arrest of Mr. Purkayastha under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by the Delhi Police.
