Film comedian K.R. Singamuthu on Wednesday filed an affidavit before the Madras High Court undertaking that he would not make any defamatory remarks against actor S.N. Vadivelu in future. The undertaking was given following a suit for damages filed by the latter.

Justice G. Jayachandran recorded the contents of the affidavit and closed an application filed by Mr. Vadivelu, along with his suit, to restrain Mr. Singamuthu from making defamatory allegations related to his personal and professional life either in the mainstream or social media.

The judge adjourned the hearing on the suit, seeking damages of ₹5 crore for the allegations that had already been made in interviews given to a few YouTube channels, to January 20, 2025.

In his plaint, Mr. Vadivelu had stated he had been acting in Tamil cinema since 1991 and had more than 300 movies to his credit so far. He created a niche for himself by becoming one of the most sought-after comedians whose memes continue to be popular on social media. He had collaborated with Mr. Singamuthu in many movies since 2000 and their combination had been a big hit. However, the relationship between them soured in 2015 and since then, the latter had been making personal comments against him in public fora, he complained.

He had urged the court to issue a permanent injunction restraining Mr. Singamuthu from indulging in character assassination by speaking about his personal and professional life and also to direct him to pay a compensation of ₹5 crore for the damage already caused to his reputation because of the defamatory statements.
