BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 nominees and who is favourite to win

by · Manchester Evening News

The annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year takes place on Tuesday night as six high-profile athletes aim to take the prestigious trophy home.

It has been a year that saw the men's England football team reach the finals of Euro 2024, Team GB win 65 medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and 124 medals at the Paralympics, Manchester City win a historic fourth Premier League title in a row and a teenage darts player take the sport by storm.

As a result, plenty of people are in with a chance of winning this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The winner will be decided by a public vote and announced during a live ceremony presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding.

The ceremony will also see Sir Mark Cavendish receive the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement award after ending his record-breaking 19-year career last month.

Cavendish, 39, postponed retirement last winter to have another crack at claiming a record 35th Tour de France stage win and some 16 years after he claimed his first success in his favourite race, Cavendish delivered number 35 in style on stage five into Saint-Vulbas.

The win was the 165th in a remarkable career in which Cavendish was also crowned world champion – and SportsPersonality of the Year – in 2011, won Olympic silver on the track in Rio and was a three-time Madison world champion, but one in which he also battled illness and depression before enjoying the perfect send-off.

The winner will be announced just before 9pm, with the show broadcasting live from 7pm. Below is the shortlist and a closer look at the nominees.

Jude Bellingham

After his debut season at Real Madrid, the 21-year-old midfielder has established himself as one of the best players in the world. In his first year in LaLiga he scored more than 20 times for the Spanish giants - helping them win the league title and Champions League.

Bellingham was also a key member of England's Euro 2024 squad - which saw the team reach the final of the tournament. He finished third in the Ballon d’Or standings - the best placing by an Englishman for nearly 20 years.

Keely Hodgkinson

One of Team GB's stars of the Paris Olympics was track and field superstar Keely Hodgkinson. The 22-year-old has been unbeatable over 800 metres in 2024 and she claimed her first Olympic title over the summer.

She also retained her European title and set a new British record with the fastest time by a European athlete this century.

Luke Littler

Teenager Luke Littler became one of the most talked-about sporting stars in the country after he reached the final of the PDC World Darts Championship at the age of just 16 back in January.

It proved to be no flash in the pan, with Littler going on win the Premier League and the Grand Slam of Darts among 10 titles. He has also been nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Joe Root

Cricket star Joe Root broke Sir Alastair Cook’s record of 12,472 runs to become the highest-scoring England player in Test history during the first Test against Pakistan in October

He went on to score a double century and is closing in on 13,000 runs after racking up his sixth ton of the year in New Zealand.

Dame Sarah Storey

Cycling superstar Dame Sarah Storey won gold medals in the time trial and road race at the Paris Paralympics. It was the fifth time in a row she has won the time trial and took her overall tally of golds to 19.

Dame Sarah will be 50 by the time the next Paralympics come around but she has not ruled out another appearance.

Alex Yee

Another star of the Paris Olympic games was triathlete Alex Yee. Yee's dramatic hold medal in the Triathlon saw the 26-year-old stage a last-gasp resurgence and overhaul New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde.

Yee then helped Britain win bronze in the team relay before claiming his first world triathlon title in October.

Who is favourite to win?

These are the current odds, according to Ladbroke, with Keely Hodgkinson clear favourite:

  • Keely Hodgkinson - 2/9
  • Luke Littler - 3/1
  • Joe Root 50/1
  • Alex Yee - 66/1
  • Dame Sarah Storey - 100/1
  • Jude Bellingham - 150/1

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 will be live in BBC One from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday, December 17.
