BBC Strictly Come Dancing fans spot Wynne Evans problem with Katya Jones and predict 'fuming' star

by · Manchester Evening News

Strictly Come Dancing fans think they spotted a problem with Wynne Evans and Katya Jones' latest routine, while also predicting that a former show star would be 'fuming' after seeing the performance.

The pair had to bounce back during week nine of the BBC One dance contest, which was broadcast live from Blackpool's Tower Ballroom in Strictly's annual special, after landing in the dreaded dance-off last weekend.

Strictly celebrated its 20th year by opening with the professional dancers dancing to the Pet Shop Boys performing a medley of their hits, including It’s A Sin, Suburbia and What Have I Done To Deserve This, before the eight remaining couples took to the famous sprung floor.

Comedian Chris McCausland then opened the show, delivering a classical American smooth routine to Canadian-born singer Paul Anka’s Jump with his partner Dianne Buswell. Co-host Tess Daly said they were the 100th Strictly couple to perform in Blackpool before they were awarded 37 points, their highest score of the series.

Head judge Shirley Ballas told black tie-wearing Chris that he had the "best feet I’ve seen in a long time", and "didn’t miss a beat", while Anton Du Beke said "if anyone can beat that tonight, I’d be amazed".

Meanwhile, actress Sarah Hadland and Love Island star Tasha Ghouri have jointly topped the Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard in Blackpool after their performances were both awarded a near-perfect score of 39 points out of a possible 40.

Motsi Mabuse described Tasha's intense and dramatic paso doble routine to Nathan Lanier’s Torn, during which professional Aljaz Skorjanec flung her through his legs, as the "dance of the night".

Meanwhile, Sarah and her partner Vito Coppola’s couple’s choice routine to Padam Padam by Kylie Minogue was described by judge Craig Revel Horwood as "a little too perfect". He told them he knew “it sounds weird”, but felt that se lacked emotion, which he felt "brought you out" of the performance at moments.

But it ended up being a tough night for Wynne and Katya, which saw the opera singer finish his Charleston routine by swinging his dance partner by her feet. Anton Du Beke praised Evans’ dance to Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite No 1: 5. Les Toreadors for his enthusiasm and commitment but told him he looked “exhausted towards the end of the dance”.

Fellow judge Shirley Ballas called it a “Katya special”, citing the lifts and other moves and added that it was “highly entertaining”. They received 31 points from the judges.

Strictly fans, meanwhile, took to social media to comment. @fromkelltobell said: "I felt like this was too fast for him and then made it look messy and clumsy." @huntersmoon53 replied: "I agree. I like Wynne but I think a more slapstick style Charleston would have suited him better." @rachelstaples8 posted: "I felt like Wynne was panicking throughout the whole of the dance and struggled to keep up."

But @klapvan_ commented: "Well done Wynne can't believe how you melted up with that Charleston was fast! I loved it!" @wennekeshelen added: "Yeeeeees....ur enthusiasm & sheer delight at performing was FAB-U-LOUS @wynneevans @katyajones loved the music choice aswell."

Some, however, couldn't get over Shayne Ward missing out on a place in Blackpool after controversially losing the dance-off with Nancy Xu to Wynne and Katya last weekend. @geordiegalg said: "What the hell was that?! Really didn't like it at all. Shayne must be sat at home fuming watching that! #Strictly." @cathalhaughey02 commented: "Shayne and Nancy must be fuming right now #Strictly." @mumherts added: "What was that? Shayne must be sitting at home crying !#Strictly."
