Gorka Marquez says 'sorry' to Gemma Atkinson after making dig at fiancee live on Strictly's It Takes Two

by · Manchester Evening News

Gorka Marquez was left apologising to his fiancee Gemma Atkinson after he made a cheeky dig at her on Strictly Come Dancing's spin-off show It Takes Two.

The dancer appeared on the BBC2 show on Friday (September 27) alongside his celebrity dance partner Dr Punam Krishan. Following their first live performance, Gorka and Dr Punam were given 19 points by the judges after they danced the cha cha to Love At First Sight by Australian pop star Kylie Minogue while sporting vibrant red outfits.

Appearing on It Takes Two, the pair were reflecting on their first live performance of the series last weekend before discussing what's to come in week two on Saturday night (September 28).

But during their interview with Fleur East on It Takes Two, Gorka was prompted to talk about his own family, including Hits Radio host Gemma, who he met on Strictly when she was a contestant in 2017, and their two children - Mia, five, and one-year-old Thiago.

"Thiago is old enough to watch you on TV," Fleur said about Gorka's young son. But Gorka replied by making a bit of a quip at his future wife's expense.

The 34-year-old said: "You know what, he's got the moves and this might sound not good enough for Mia but I think he might have more rhythm than Mia. I think the boys in the family have the moves, not the girls," before he quickly added: "Sorry Gemma!"

Dr Punam chimed in to say Gemma might not be so impressed with his comments, to which Gorka coyly said: "That's okay, I'm going to Glasgow," with a cheeky grin before leaving his co-stars in hysterical laughter.

It comes after Gorka shared the reality behind being away from his family for his dream career following Strictly's pre-recorded launch show earlier this month. Taking to Instagram, he shared a selfie in which tears could be seen filling his eyes and falling down his cheeks.

He spoke about people being "scared" to show their "vulnerable" side and decided to share him "having a moment that sometimes we hide or keep for ourselves, especially being a man".

The dad-of-two emotionally shared that while he should have been filled with "happiness, joy, excitement" for the Strictly season ahead, Gorka shared: "YES it is. But at the same time, I get a feeling of sadness, guilt, for going away for however long it is. A feeling of letting them down for not being there, a sense of failure to them..."

Later, Gemma spoke about how Gorka was doing after he left to train in Scotland with Dr Punam after she was asked about him during a Q&A with her fans on social media. Speaking directly to the camera, the Hits Radio host said: "He's good, thank you. Thank you for checking in with him. It's just really hard for him. He absolutely loves his job but he hates being away from home. It's just part and parcel and I get it..."

She added: "Thiago was poorly the day he was leaving so he just wanted to be home. But he's good. We're FaceTiming him loads." Gemma also wrote: He's good thank you. I totally understand how he was feeling as Tio was poorly when he had to leave and now Mia cries every time he goes.

"When she was a baby she didn't really notice bu now she constantly asks him when he's back, why he has to go and telling him she wants him home which makes it harder for him."

Gemma was then asked if she'll be taking Mia to watch Gorka in action live in the ballroom. But she confirmed: "Mia isn't allowed to watch live as children aren't allowed on set (unless to watch rehearsals). But I'll 100% be going! Always love watching Gorks dance live a whooping like a football mum."
