Coronation Street's Betsy Swain actress 'so moved' as co-star jumps to her defence after backlash

Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has admitted to being 'so moved' after an outpouring of love from her co-stars and fans. The actress joined the ITV soap earlier this year as Betsy Swain.

Fans were stunned when the newcomer's character was revealed to be the daughter of DS Lisa Swain, played by Vicky Myers, who announced she had become a regular on the street back in March, much to viewers' delight.

So far, Betsy has caused many problems for her mother while the often stressed-out detective sergeant has struggled to bond with the teenager since the death of her partner and Betsy's other mum, Becky, in the line of duty.

Off screen, Vicky and Sydney have stuck up a strong relationship, much like mother and daughter, and have regularly shared public praise for one another.

And earlier this week, Vicky jumped to her young co-star's defence after it was revealed Sydney has been nominated in the 'Best Soap Newcomer' category at the TV Choice Awards 2025 alongside Corrie co-star Jack Carroll, who plays Bobby Crawford.

After getting what appeared to be a negative response on X, formerly known as Twitter, Vicky waded in and said in response to the tweet: "She’s far from awful. Quite the opposite actually." Sydney then replied: "love you mama bear." Vicky then later responded: "Love you more."

Corrie co-star Cait Fitton, who plays Weatherfield's Lauren Bolton, was also quick to show her support, writing: "I am so proud of you Syd! You stay true to yourself, your beautiful self . Keep shining." And fans were also quick to jump to her defence. @markbriscoe31 said: "You are amazing Betsy is one of my favourite character in Corrie Sydney." @mishybabez_ commented: "You are doing incredible Sydney keep up the amazing work in corrie proud of you cant wait to see more of Betsy."

@claudiaasiann replied: "You’re already such a talent, haters gonna hate but you’re always going to prove them wrong." @KeeleyTown52229 posted: "Take no notice of them you are playing a blinder. Wholly believable with a bright future ahead." @EveSukiEE added: "Sydney, you're incredible. Do not let those immature people bring you down."

Later, Sydney responded to the messages she had received writing: "I'm so moved by all the lovely comments. You’ve all made my week, from the bottom of my heart- thank you, kindness is always the answer xxx."
