Jeff Brazier pays tribute to son Freddy after Race Across the World final reveals winners

by · Manchester Evening News

Jeff Brazier has paid tribute to his son Freddy as they watched their Race Across the World journey come to an end on-screen on a special day. The father and son duo were among the pairs racing almost 7,800 miles from the Amazon Rainforest to Chile in the BBC show.

The journey saw the pairs race across the length of South America, through the likes of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. But they had been stripped of all mod-cons and luxuries including smartphones and bank cards, competitors had to rely on their skills, hard work and the kindness of strangers to succeed with a limited budget.

For Jeff and Freddy, it was an emotional journey with viewers often left in tears over their frank and moving conversations with one another as they discussed an array of personal topics from the loss of Freddy's mum, Jade Goody, to Jeff's parenting in the years following Jade's death.

The final episode, which aired on BBC One on Wednesday night (September 18), viewers saw Jeff and Freddy take a break and relax at a thermal spring outside of Mendoza, Argentina, before continuing on in the race.

However, when they decided to crack on with the race, they ran into trouble, with buses being full and needing to move to a different Once in Santiago, they found themselves trapped in a gridlock traffics, bringing their journey to a standstill.

And that time may have cost them as they eventually came in third place, with BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills and husband Sam winning the series, and Actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary-Ellen coming in second place.

Following the airing of the final episode, Jeff took to Instagram to pay tribute to Freddy as it was also his 20th birthday. Sharing a picture of the pair from their travels, the TV star, who is also father to actor son Bobby, said: "Happy Birthday to our Freddy.

"I hope your 20th year brings you infinite health & happiness. It’s been my great privilege to watch you grow & I’ll be there by your side no matter the challenge."

Jeff added: "Speaking of which, thank you for making my race experience one I’ll never forget. You have so many endearing qualities and you gave me so many wonderful moments so thank you my greatest teacher. Love you."
