'My sister hates my baby's special name - she wants us to change it'

While some parents name their children after relatives, others 'invent' new names for them to carry down through the bloodline. That's exactly what one couple decided to do when naming their daughter Cheelee to keep their already established theme.

However, their 'unique' take on the name Keelee hasn't gone down well with their family, who have been discussing it behind their backs. Taking to Reddit, the 25-year-old said: "I am expecting a daughter in November with my fiancée Clair. My name is Cody, so we’d like to keep the C theme going.

"If we have a boy later, he’ll be Charles after Clair’s grandpa. My fiance and me really like the name Keelee, but we’re spelling it Ceelee or Cheelee with a hard C to keep the theme. The problem is my sister Angie, 28. She’s child-free, but she’s still very opinionated and judgemental about names."

Angie strongly prefers common names like Emma and Madeline - and have made her views on the name Cheelee extremely clear. He added: "We went to her and her boyfriend’s place, and she took my fiancée Clair aside, supposedly to 'help cut vegetables'. Actually, Angie just wanted to rip into my fiancée with her name opinions. She said we should forget about Cheelee.

"She said she’d already talked it over with our mum (Clair’s mother-in-law), and 'they’d decided that we should go with Catherine or Catie instead.' Clair of course said hell no to that, and called me. I came in, and I told Angie we needed to go. In the car home, we called my mum, but she wouldn’t admit to 'agreeing' with Angie about belting the name."

However, he has been left wondering whether naming his daughter Cheelee could negatively impact her in the family considering 'everyone hates it'. Commenting on his post, one user said: "As a former high school and college teacher, you're wrong to saddle your child with a name that pretends that phonics work however you want them to work. Pick a different C name, please. Your child will never have a day’s rest with Ch pretending to be a K."

Another user added: "Please do not name your child Cheelee just for the sake of keeping C names and your own vanity. The choice is the parents in the end, but there’s no need to be ridiculous." A third user said: "Cheelee is a stupid name. You get to pick your kid's name, but why would you set up that child for bullying? Picture that name on a resume. It's ridiculous."
