The heartbreaking reason behind Joe Biden's tie at his final G20 Summit
At the G20 Summit earlier this month, US President Joe Biden was seen donning a Beau Biden Foundation necktie in memory of his late son, who died from brain cancer back in 2015
by Ryan Fahey · The MirrorA heartbreaking image has surfaced of US President Joe Biden wearing a necktie at the G20 Summit with a highly emotional significance.
On May 30, 2015, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden died after a battle with brain cancer, which the president has previously attributed to his time stationed near toxic burn pits in Iraq.
The tie worn by the president is said to have been specially designed by Beau's Ties of Vermont for the Beau Biden Foundation - a child protection charity set up in memory of Beau. On the site, the ties are listed as "hand-woven silk ties" that "are the perfect way to show your support to protect children in style."
On the anniversary of Beau's death in May this year, President Biden invoked the memory of his late son while giving a talk at the Arlington National Cemetery for a Memorial Day ceremony.
Speaking to family members who have lost loved ones in service, Biden spoke of his own loss in Beau. "Our losses are not the same. He didn’t perish on the battlefield. He was a cancer victim as a consequence of being in the army in Iraq for a year next to a burn pit. A major of the U.S. National Army, National Guard, living and working, like too many, besides that toxic burn pit," the president said during the address.
Biden has previously recalled the final moments he spent with his son including the holding Beau's hand just before the 46-year-old passed away. “[Beau] looked at me and he said, ‘Dad, I’m not afraid. I’m okay,’ ” the former vice president said to Oprah Winfrey.
He continued: “It was at the very end. His brother [Hunter] was sitting there, the three of us were holding hands and [Beau] wanted to reassure us [that he was okay].”
During the interview, Biden also recalled the moment his son told him to "stop looking sad" while he was in hospital. He added: “I’d see him and he’d say, ‘Dad, look at me. Stop looking sad…no matter what happens, I’m gonna be alright, Dad. You’ve got to look happy. You’ve got to look strong for the family.’
Despite the loss of his son, Biden admitted Beau is always with him - thanks to his grandkids. “What I do is I look at my grandson — his son — and I see him", he said. "I look at my granddaughter, I see her. And I know [Beau]’s still here. He’s still with me.”
Beau is the son of President Biden and his late first wife, Neilia, who was killed in a 1972 car crash that gravely injured Beau and his younger brother Hunter and also killed their baby sister. Beau served in Delaware’s Army National Guard, including a deployment to Iraq, where the president says he was exposed to toxic gases from pits where the military burned waste. Biden has linked his son’s cancer to his exposure to burn pits.
