The sailor is simple to see, but spotting his wife is another story entirely - only those with hawk-like vision can pick her out. This brainteaser has left people stumped, with 99% of people unable to find the sailor’s wife in this tricky optical illusion. The aim of the challenge is to spot the sailor’s wife’s face within the illustration, but finding her has proven a challenge for most.

The illusion shows a sailor looking out to sea in search of his wife, but she’s actually closer than he thinks. The point of an optical illusion is to create a visual trick that deceives the brain into noticing things that aren’t clearly there or perceiving things in a different way to how they actually appear on the page. They’re a really great way to keep your cognitive skills sharp and your mind active - especially as they challenge how our brains interpret visual information.

The best way to find the answer to the optical illusion is to turn it upside down( Image: Playbuzz)

When you first glance at the image, it’s easy to spot the sailor, but his wife isn’t visible. Unless you have 20/20 vision and a high IQ, the chances are that you’re going to struggle to solve this rather mind-bending challenge.

Like all brainteasers, there are ways that you can make the challenge a little easier to conquer. It’s a good idea to split the image down into smaller sections, so that you can scan each part individually. Another tactic that some people have found helpful is to focus on one different element of the picture at a time, and analyse what’s around that element.

The optical illusion was originally shared on TikTok, and left the majority of users baffled over where the woman was located within the image. One user dubbed the brainteaser the ‘trickiest’ puzzle they’d ever seen.
