How Kate Middleton's 'royal sister' Sophie filled the void left by Meghan Markle
Sophie's ability to balance royal duties with personal challenges has made her one of the most respected members of the Firm - but it’s her quiet mentorship of the Princess of Wales that stands out
by Mariam Khan · The MirrorSince becoming a part of the Royal Family 25 years ago, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, has firmly established herself as a key player within the monarchy.
Her ability to balance royal duties with personal challenges has made her one of the most respected members of the Firm. But it’s her quiet mentorship of the Princess of Wales that stands out. Earlier this month, Sophie once again proved her value to Kate when she stood by her side during the Remembrance Sunday service.
Kate, who has only recently completed cancer treatment, appeared overwhelmed in the public eye, the Daily Mail reports. The Princess is said to have confided in Sophie, and reportedly said: “You’re never quite ready for this…” Sophie reassured her niece-in-law and placed a comforting hand on Kate’s back. The bond between Sophie and Kate has been built on mutual respect and shared experiences.
Sophie has been a supportive figure throughout Kate’s royal journey, offering guidance when Kate first entered the royal spotlight. While Meghan Markle was initially expected to play the role of Kate’s "royal sister," reports suggest that the bond between Meghan and Kate never quite materialised. Meghan reportedly declined the Queen's offer for Sophie to mentor her, while Kate has embraced Sophie’s wisdom and support wholeheartedly.
As royal biographer Claudia Joseph notes, Sophie, 17 years older than Kate, “has seen and done it all before,” making her an ideal confidante for the Princess of Wales. Kate and Sophie’s relationship has always been one of support but also one of friendship.
They share a similar sense of humour and a grounded nature. This was evident in 2017 when the two royals were caught laughing uncontrollably at Royal Ascot after Sophie nearly lost her balance in a carriage. In many ways, they are more like sisters than aunts and nieces.
Sophie also plays a practical role in Kate’s life. Reports have revealed that she has acted as a “secret shopper” for the Princess, often picking out clothes for her. In 2019, designer Donna Ida shared that Sophie bought a black jumpsuit for herself, then ordered one for Kate as well, suggesting it was for home wear.
Their fashion connection was evident again in 2023 at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, where they stepped out in matching outfits, highlighting their shared sense of style. As Kate continues to navigate royal life post her cancer diagnosis and recovering from her treatment, Sophie remains a steady pillar of support.
