Robinson fused hip-hop, dance, African history, tap, jazz and even Jamaican moves as she crafted the musical numbers in “The Color Purple.” One highlight was “Push da Button” performed by Taraji P. Henson’s Shug Avery. Robinson made sure there were plenty of props including handkerchiefs, scarves and even a cane. The idea was she always had something to play with. “I gave her movements, so she had somewhere to go and it wasn’t just a flat performance on stage.”
On episodic, Jon Boogz took home the award for his work on “Blindspotting.” From choreographing ten-minute numbers to crafting a story of racism through dance, Boogz had to work with the cast. Early in season 2, Boogz used a dreamlike dance sequence to teach a valuable history lesson. Said Boogz, “We came up with this idea to do this representation through three different generations: slavery, civil rights and modern day.”
