Woman dies after being mauled by dogs in Madera County. Deputies forced to put down two
by Anthony Galaviz · The Fresno BeeA woman was killed after she was mauled by dogs on Monday afternoon in Coarsegold.
Deputies with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:30 p.m. near the 46000 block of Road 417 near Quartz Mountain Road in Coarsegold, and found the woman.
She was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Tyson Pogue in a video statement released on social media Tuesday afternoon said the victim was 18.
While deputies were taking the three dogs involved into custody Monday night, two of them escaped.
One of them fled the area while the other approached personnel and had to be put down at the scene.
Deputies found the third dog later Tuesday, and it was also put down.
“There is no further known threat to residents in that area,” the sheriff’s office said on social media at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“We believe the canines responsible for the mauling incident have been located.”
The owner of the dogs was cooperative with the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
Pogue in his video statement noted that the incident occurred just north of Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino on Tribal Trust Land in Madera County.
“There’s been a lot of comments on Facebook as far as animal control and the responsibilities in this area. ... On Tribal Trust Land, according to public law 280, statutory ordinances, like the Madera County ordinances, do not apply.
“So ordinances such as leash law, building codes and several other codes do not apply on Tribal Trust Land.
“The dogs resided on Tribal Trust Land, this attack occurred on Tribal Trust Land. And unfortunately animal control has no jurisdiction on Tribal Trust Land.
“This was a truly tragic and heartbreaking event. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, the friends and the community members.”
