Strictly Come Dancing's Chris McCausland shares behind-the-scenes struggle in family update

Strictly Come Dancing star Chris McCausland has opened up about the struggles he has been facing behind-the-scenes after a couple of tough weeks on the BBC show, in a rare update on his home life.

The 47-year-old comedian has given an insight into the intense training and late night trips home. In his Telegraph column, Chris says he has been heading back home “super late” on Saturdays so he can “wake up in his own bed” on a Sunday.

While the Strictly Come Dancing results show airs on BBC One on Sunday night, it is pre-recorded on the Saturday after the main show. It means stars such as Chris can have the Sunday off before starting rehearsals again.

However, Chris finds himself feeling “quite flat” and ends up spending the day recovering. In his column for The Telegraph, he said: “I find that I am feeling quite flat on Sunday as the week’s intensive training, and then the stress and emotion of Saturday, is quite draining.

“I try to remain on the couch as much as possible and entice my daughter into a game of Uno so that I can teach her about handing defeats early in life. Yeah, I am an oversized child.

“Trying to get an 11-year-old off an iPad is like trying to persuade someone that they should give up a chocolate gateau to lick a tomato instead. It’s often a lost cause and I’m the one wallowing in defeat.”

Chris, who this year became Strictly’s first blind contestant, has become a fan-favourite paired with Dianne Buswell. While Chris says the pair had “a lot of fun” in the first five weeks, he confesses the Samba and Tango have been harder.

This is because he felt the pair lacked the “wow factor” in the more technical routines. It saw them placing joint bottom and joint second-from bottom on the leaderboard, saved by the viewers' vote each time.

This week, however, is the duo's “Couple’s Choice,” with Chris hoping his and Dianne's dance to Instant Karma by John Lennon will provide some “personal meaning”. Chris has previously spoken out about the apprehension he felt ahead of Strictly.

While he might be one of the favourites to win the famous Glitterball Trophy, Chris admits he asks Dianne the same question each week. When asked by Heat magazine if he thought he would do so well on the show, Chris replied: “No. Every time we get through I say to Dianne ‘I got away with that, didn’t I?’"

Strictly Come Dancing will return on BBC One at 6.35pm tomorrow
