"What a wonderful win right before Christmas, and we cannot wait to pay out this amazing prize. Players are urged to check their tickets and to give us a call if they think they are tonight’s lucky winner."

Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, regular lottery players expressed their shock and envy. One person posted: "Congrats to lucky winner. Wish I'd bought a ticket now."

The National Lottery recently celebrated its 30th birthday by hitting a huge £50 billion fundraising goal for good causes, Mirror reports. Since starting on November 19, 1994, it has raised more than £30 million each week for good causes.

The biggest ever win was scooped by a lucky UK player who wished to remain anonymous. They scooped the record EuroMillions jackpot of £195 million in July 2022 – the biggest National Lottery win of all time and making them richer than Adele, Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles.

The National Lottery has also funded the making of more than 600 films which have won some 551 awards, including 16 Oscars, 128 BAFTAS and 34 Cannes awards.
