Richard Osman shares 'truth' about alcohol consumed by guests on BBC's Saturday Kitchen

Richard Osman has spilled the beans on how much alcohol is actually consumed on the set of the hit BBC show Saturday Kitchen, after appearing as a guest

Richard Osman has revealed the "truth" about the actual amount of alcohol consumed by guests during the filming of Saturday Kitchen.

The TV presenter and author recently made an appearance on the popular BBC show, joining host Matt Tebbutt, chefs Anna Haugh and Sophie Wyburd, and drinks connoisseur Olly Smith.

The episode featured the group savouring a Rose La Forcadiere, a wine mentioned in Richard's book, We Solve Murders.

Every week, Olly matches a wine with the dish that Matt prepares for the celebrity guests on the show. However, despite this, the stars and presenters never seem to be under the influence during the early morning broadcast.

Richard has now disclosed that those on set only sample "a little bit" of the wine and food prepared in the renowned kitchen.

While speaking on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, he shared: "I think they have a rehearsal for the chefs and things like that, because it's quite technical, and I know they do drink the wine during the rehearsal because when we were drinking the wine on the show, someone said, 'this tastes so much better than it did earlier because it's been allowed to breathe'.

"The truth is, you don't drink an awful lot of it. So they will bring over the food, and you don't eat a lot of the food either, you will have a mouthful of the food.

"Olly Smith, he was the wine expert when I was on it and just for each dish, so maybe there's four bottles of wine you try, but you only have a little sip.

"When I was on Sunday Brunch a few years ago they did hot gin cocktails, and this was about 11 o'clock in the morning, and we really knocked those back."

Richard mentioned that the wine "immediately gets taken away" and the crew consume the food prepared by the chefs. He revealed that the quantity of wine tasted during filming equates to roughly "two glasses of wine", confessing you "do feel it" slightly post-filming.

He further commented: "Even by the end, if you've had two sips of each [glass], you've had maybe two glasses of wine or something and you feel it a tiny bit. Nothing compared to the hot gin cocktails on Sunday Brunch, that was challenging."

Saturday Kitchen is set to return on BBC One at 10am today with host Matt being joined by Brassic star Michelle Keegan. Chefs Theo Randall and Mary McCartney and wine expert Olly will also feature.
