Review: Bloodborne (PlayStation 4)

It almost doesn't matter what Sony does — nothing can placate the hunger that PlayStation fans have for anything Bloodborne. One of the most beloved exclusive titles to release in the last 10 years, the PS4 action RPG from Japan Studio and FromSoftware is held in incredibly high regard — and everyone is asking for more.

The game's main issue is its ropey performance, with a choppy frame rate a stain on an otherwise fantastic experience. Unfortunately, Bloodborne never received a patch to take advantage of PS4 Pro, which began a sort of embittered attitude among fans that think Sony has abandoned its gothic masterpiece.

In the years since, fans have been calling out for a sequel, a remaster, a remake, a PC port, or even just a patch to the original — anything to satiate their desire for a better Bloodborne experience.

Modders have managed to crack the game open and adjust the code to get it running more smoothly, but an official version is yet to exist.

It's now reached a point where, as part of a speech at this year's Golden Joystick Awards, Ben Starr — best known as the voice of Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy 16 — called Sony out for its lack of Bloodborne action:

"It's absolutely criminal that we don't have an official version of Bloodborne running at 60 frames per second," he exclaims to whoops of support from the crowd.

Indeed, it would be nice, wouldn't it?

This is why we can't have nice things

As we approach the game's 10th anniversary in March, it does seem like the ideal time to make some sort of announcement. We shouldn't expect anything, really, but it's nice to know Sony's even getting called out by the heroes from other PlayStation exclusives.

Why, it has to be a reason why the developer don't want to bring anything new about the game on PlayStation since the initial release.

Do they want more money? A dispute? Bad blood between the two companies?

It has to be something going on behind the scenes preventing even a 60fps patch.

Sony is going to hold Bloodborne on ice until they can use it to boost console sales, pretty much like Demon's Souls was.
Those are the only 2 From Software made IP's they actually own.
By the same analogy, like Demon's Souls had never had a PC version (hey, they have to keep some exclusives exclusive, right?), there's a high probability Bloodborne won't either.

PS6 launch title Bloodborne remake, guaranteed. Like Demon's Souls remake for PS5

I really didn't like FFXVI but Ben seems really cool and like he really appreciates and respects his role in it, and the wider gaming community. "60fps, get 'em Torgal!"

@Major_Player Miyazaki said a few years back that it's one of their favourite titles internally and they want to do more with it, but the timing is always off and they need direction from Sony before they do anything.

Realistically there's probably been some hesitation over the years around a remaster because of the relatively slow initial sales of Bloodborne. It did well enough at launch, but it built it's big numbers up slowly over time. It's likely they don't want to release something that only a vocal community on the internet are asking for and risk damaging a storied brand. (Then again, Concord.)

As for a basic 60fps patch, I have no idea what the story is there. The Bloodborne comics are ongoing so the franchise is not dead. I can only imagine it's down to timing.

Imagine being someone 9 years later after the game got released and still crying about a 60fps patch or a remaster.
Weren't we all tired of the endless remasters this generation?

@Skeletor85 imagine being a developer in 2024, producing utter dross that barely runs on the hardware, and has cringe dialogue aimed at a modern audience that doesn’t exist, losing hundreds of millions of dollars whilst gamers would rather play a polished up 9 year old game.

Shut up @Skeletor85! Let us have this

@Shepherd_Tallon : As I said there's has to be far more than what the developer has said, as of course he wouldn't say publicly something like "We have some issues with Sony" to the point that even something as basic as a patch seems impossible to come by.

@Major_Player I doubt if it's anything too dramatic. We tend to drift towards filling in the gaps with speculation at our end, when very often it's a non-issue and it just comes down to timing. "When will doing/announcing this have the biggest impact? Do it then." That kind of thing.
Or maybe it's as simple as the director insisting on being the one to oversee it, but not having the time.

Sooo now we know Sony tryna acquire the company behind manga and fromsoftware.. is this the big push for a bloodborne remake or even a sequel?

I haven't played Bloodborne but the worth of a Remaster later down the line selling is improvements. They might be holding out 60fps for remaster or remake so its more likely to sell. Or they don't care

For anyone who is still on the fence, FF16 is £15 at Amazon in the Black Friday sale. It's a bargain at that price.

@Shepherd_Tallon Its most likely down to timing possibly mixed in with plans they already have for the game. I imagine their timings for work must be very tight as they do rattle games out much faster than a lot of other studios.

I still think that BB will get the Demon Souls treatment for the PS6 launch and a big bonus for that will be the improved visuals and framerate. So why boost the framerate now when they can make money down the line.

I SUSPECT they are waiting for Bluepoint Games to be free to make a proper remake just as they brilliantly did for Demon's Souls. That's the Bloodborne I want, but I wish they had given us a simple 60fps patch in the meantime.

@MrMagic Was about to buy FF XVI, then realised I don't have a drive for my PS5 Pro yet! lol. At £15 might buy it anyway for next year.

I find it almost amusing that the main voice actor for a game I didnt buy purely because its framerate in performance mode was a complete and utter dumpster fire outside of combat (I played the demo), is now complaining we cant play a different game at 60fps....

Sorry Clive your mom (SE) broke up with Sony so he isn't daddy anymore and doesn't need to care about what you want.

No but for real. I know people "want" this (the day it happens it won't sell as much as people think because that's the nature of humans) but I can't help but find this situations of very poor taste.

It's like when pc mags have the chance to talk with Miyazaki and instead of talking about his current and future work or about what it's inside FromSoft minds when developing they prefer to ask "WheRe iS BlOoDbOrNe foR PC". If Japanese people weren't designed to be nice he would have said "F*ck off" already.

@themightyant Yeah you might as well at that price and hopefully Sony can get their act together so that you're able to get your hands on a drive sooner rather than later.

@Ilyn tbh I didn't think they'd give it the Demon's Souls treatment, but the more time passes the more I think you're right.

@MrMagic I just did. TBH I knew I likely wouldn't be able to get a drive till next year already, but I've got dozens of games to play already digitally. No rush.

Aww Ben Starr is absolutely right and gorgeous.

Who could say no to Ben 🫶🏻

The obsession over frames is everything that is wrong with gaming

It'll happen and some will still complain about it, while others will be satisfied. Then we shall move on.

@GymratAmarillo I get where you're coming from, and largely agree that past a point it becomes a nuisance, but a definitive no from FromSoft would have precluded a lot of that. Either way, the PC crowd got tired of waiting, built an emulator and can already play it at 60fps. Seems like money left on the table tbh.

@Major_Player it's impractical to have issues with one of the companies that is giving capital to keep your studio alive when there is no abuse.

There is no major mystery, everything it's about money. Either Nixxes is working in a full remaster now that they made the jump from porting team to developer team starting with Horizon "as the first of many" or Sony isn't interested in paying for a patch.

That simple patch represents time and money. Doesn't matter if you are asian or from the west you won't do it for free, when developers say "We want" they mean "We want to get paid to do it" specially when you are working in something else already.

This is getting so tiring

@SlipperyFish the whole Bloodbourn discourse? Some of us aren't interested in pointless articles about a mediocre game.
It didn't sell well, deal with it editorial staff.

@Michael2008ish yes, the bloodborne discourse. Imo, it's a fantastic game, and the main reason I got a PS4. But yeah, it didn't sell that well, it's fairly niche, but people keep beating a dead horse over it getting 60fps or a remaster. I don't see the point in remastering PS4 games, I'd rather wait until PS6 to get a demon's souls style remake. I thought everyone was sick of remakes anyway?

@SlipperyFish Glad that even though you love the game, your sick of the discourse over it.
Demon Souls was a great remake imo, but pls ppl stfu about bloodborne.

At this point I don't see why anyone would settle for 60fps on an update for a last-gen game.

I hope you never get it. I like watching y'all squirm!

Bloodborne has become a meme. I don't get this obsession with that game like you have no other Fromsoft games to play and that they all don't play pretty similarly. I know it's "more aggressive" but it's not really that different from all the others.

Yeah I'm a big BB fan and I still enjoy it as is. This demand for 60fps is getting tiring. I mean how'd you even enjoy it if you hated the fps that much...

@TheArt as someone who grew up on PAL PS2 (25 fps), a smooth 30fps feels good enough

Bruh it's never happening lmao 🤣

@Skeletor85 see that's the thing about YOU living on social media too much. A SMALL amount of customers follow the complain trend loudly. Same people that said the portal and pro would fail. Heres a trendy thing to say that I'm sure you're familiar with, touch grass.

@TheArt I just waited the 9 years and counting. Might emulate now that's almost perfected.
I waited to play cyberpunk for path tracing. Waited to play Ff7 remake on ps5. Tonight I start up rebirth on the pro.

1st experience is everything, I'm patient. I don't play games twice.
