Rumour: EA Going All-In on Battlefield 6 in Bold Attempt to Revitalise Franchise
The real battle begins
by Robert Ramsey · Push SquareEA is pumping an unprecedented amount of resources into Battlefield 6, claims a new report from Insider Gaming. Essentially, the publisher is looking to right the wrongs of the franchise's most recent stumbles. Most importantly, it's keen to avoid another Battlefield 2042 situation, where the shooter was completely undercooked at launch in 2021.
Of course, there was a time when Battlefield was a huge deal — a time when it could almost go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty in terms of genre appeal. But the series' reputation has taken a serious beating over the last decade or so, with the likes of Battlefield V and the aforementioned Battlefield 2042 failing to recapture the property's previous glory.
So Battlefield 6, understandably, wants to be the big one. Four whole studios are apparently working on it, with series veterans DICE leading the charge, flanked by Criterion Games, Motive, and Ripple Effect.
But as the report elaborates, everyone working on Battlefield 6 seems to have been given a player-first mandate. The most widespread playtests in franchise history will supposedly ensure that the entire project stays on track, ahead of its eventual launch in late 2025.
Basically, we're looking at the most expensive Battlefield ever. We'll obviously have to wait and see whether EA's immense funding actually results in a true return to form, but it's clear that the publisher's taking things seriously.

About Robert Ramsey
Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he's played 'em all. A little too much, some might say.

Was Battlefield 1 really a bad attempt? I think it was quite successful back in the day, and critics were also positive.
I don't understand why big AAA-producing studios don't take a page out of the playbook of competitors (especially smaller ones) and do stuff like release a Battlefield game in Early Access. Put it out there for a year+ to work with players and their feedback and craft something that truly hits a mark.
I mean, Delta Force is out in beta/alpha form, trying to eat Battlefield's lunch and may very well launch in a better state than the last few Battlefield titles because of it.
The hubris some of these developers have is beyond me. It's like they truly believe they know better than the people they're trying to woo to buy their game and then they get surprised when they release stuff that players don't like or even want.

@ShogunRok @Max_the_German Yeah, I was about to say that I thought B1 was considered one of the best in the series. Robert, are you perhaps thinking of Battlefield V? Or is there some statistic that I'm not aware of?
Wait wait wait... Battlefield 1 was a failure? That game was amazing are you kidding me and a beautiful game too compared to some games today

AKA, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks!
@0niguy @wildcat_kickz @Max_the_German Yeah I'm 100% thinking of Battlefield V — got them mixed up!
Maybe they can launch with a scoreboard with this additional effort.
I miss Battlefield. Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1 were amazing. Incredible atmosphere and destruction. Battlefield 5 missed the what made BF great and was an unfinished buggy mess. BF 2042 was a heap of steaming *****.
I have very little confidence in Dice as we got the same PR stuff about the previous 2 entries.
Dice need to understand what made BF great and not try to chase trends

Despite their slip ups, I do think BF is the better option between that and CoD. It feels like the last bastion of AAA military MP shooters.
I like to make the analogy that if CoD is football - with all its toxicity and undeserved popularity - then BF is rubgy; the gentleman's game of FPS.
I think DICE need to take a long, hard look at games like Hell Let Loose to see how large scale conflicts and genuine teamwork are presented to players. I still have hope that they can pull off a great game.

I'm excited for this. CoD has taken a big step back this year, in my opinion. So between Battlefield 6, and Delta Force, I'm ready for a new FPS.

@iPaud Exactly. Stop chasing trends; stop trying to BE CoD and present itself as the alternative! The whole reason why people love BF is that it isn't Call of Duty.
Atmosphere of bf1 with destruction of bad company 2 and vehicle movement of 2042 with map support like b4 and metro from bf3.
That'll be my dream Battlefield game.

I came to really enjoy BF2042 and then the PS5 player count dropped off a cliff and I can barely get a game without turning on PC-included cross-play.
I also find the emphasis on a return to a "modern day" setting strange: 2042 is only 18 years away. It's not exactly like there'll be a huge difference in the weapons and vehicles in the game.
I miss the harbour map of bf3. good times
“Battlefield 6 seems to have been given a player first mandate”
It’s astonishing that devs need to actually push that as a development priority! Hence the reason the market is in it’s current state.

Let's hope it is an actual battlefield game this time and not some weird Fortnight X COD wannabe.
I really want a good battlefield game.

If it has destruction, and isn’t set in a real life historical warzone, then I am all in. I loved playing the original Bad Company; the maps were a decent size, the squads were small compared to the more recent games, and you could blow holes in walls and take down buildings. To me, that’s what Battlefield will always be and what makes it stand out from COD, but it hasn’t really been that for a while. Seems to be all about massive maps and 100s of people running and jumping and sniping me from miles off.
I personally just want an updated Bad Company 2! Lots of destruction and great maps. Also with the state of warzone at the mo, I'd love a BR mode with the battlefield realism/destruction and game play.

Bf2042 was pretty good. I played it for quite a long time with my mates and we enjoyed it for what it is. Bad company 2 is still the best bf game and they should just remake that as it had the best maps and squad dm was a bloody hoot..

Bad company 2 BF3 and BF4 were all fantastic games. Its amazing how out of touch these developers are with what the fans actually want. They chase trends that no one wants or asks for then wonder why the games fall on their ass whilst blaming the fans for not buying their game.

I just hope whatever campaign they make doesn't involve arrogant, authoritarian leaders provoking a dictator--who happens to lead a Nuclear superpower--via a proxy war directed by psycopaths that ends up with WW3 and the countless deaths of regular people whose tax money was appropriated for this mess in the first place.
Because, you know, I play games to escape from reality.
A friendly reminder that the previous flop was a "LoVeLeTtEr tO tHe FaNs".
Anyone who trust EA must be high af on illegals.

Well if they try this time instead of too much back and forth of what 2042 was going to be in development then launched, got there but so much back and forth.
Who knows this time how 6 or whatever they call it will go.
They should take notes from BattleBit or others.
Then again still waiting on a BF 2 MC swap feature return or Driver San Fransisco's either.

BF2 - great game
BFBC1 - good at the time of it's release, for a console game
BFBC2 - amazing game for it's time period with the level of destruction possible
BF3 - great multiplayer, with destruction still close to that of BFBC2
BF4 - more of the same of BF3, good times
BF Hard Line - the less we say the better
BF1 - a decent enough MP, if a little barebones and rubbish destruction. Time period not for me
BF5 - extremely barebones, rubbish destruction, and again the time period was not for me
BF2042 - decent enough after a year or 2 of patches, however new class/squad system ruins it, along with the rubbish destruction
They need a return to the class system of the original games (which they have confirmed), to reduce the player count from 128 to 64 again (also confirmed, I believe), and add in destruction similar to that of The Finals (similar to BFBC2) for BF6 to be something I'll spend years on.
