Horror Curio Slitterhead Emerged from Ideas for a Big Budget Siren 3
Forbidden Siren indeed
by Stephen Tailby · Push SquareSlitterhead, the unusual horror action title from the creator of Siren and Gravity Rush, exists today because of concepts initially created for a potential Siren 3.
In an interview with Keiichiro Toyama (translated by Automaton), he reveals that, while still at Sony, a third Siren game was floated due to a reemerging interest in the series. Unfortunately, that never made it very far, but it did ultimately lead to this year's body-hopping body horror adventure.
"Slitterhead was born out of the idea of What if I were to make Siren 3?" Toyama said. With the series beginning to see an uptick in popularity, Sony apparently wanted to explore a potential AAA successor, prompting Toyama and his team to start conceptualising ideas.
He wanted to have the Siren successor be set in an open world 1990s Hong Kong, but "various circumstances" led to his departure from the platform holder and going independent. Ultimately, he and his team decided to continue building on the idea, leading to Slitterhead.
Another benefit of going indie is he could make the game with a high age rating in mind. "This would have been difficult to achieve during my time at SIE, so this time, I thought I’d take on a daring challenge," Toyama said.
We rather liked the game which, despite its flaws, we called an "absolute must-play if you’re looking for an original take on the survival horror genre".

Well in that case what a waste of those ideas, which is a huge shame as from the initial teaser I was so excited for this game but man, it’s really not worth it’s asking price.
I’ll be honest, I’ve not played it(never will) but the game looks like total jank nonsense. I feel it’s a pretty big vindication for Sony in shutting down Japan Studio after so many people complaining about it for years.
Slitterhead Is an excellent horror game. It’s a unique experience and certainly not a survival game. Most of the human you possess are completely disposable.
Personnaly never really liked the Siren seires, and while Slitterhead was under cooked, I much prefer it over Siren.

There’s a long list of problems with this game
- Bad character models
- Basic stealth sections that actually make no sense when you think about it
- Replaying the same levels multiple times
- Replaying missions to unlock a rarity and again towards the end of the game if you want the true ending
- The constant stop and start during gameplay. Dialogue/cutscene. Move forward a few steps. More dialogue/another cutscene
- Minimal voice acting
- 90% of the story is told through static text drops. You don’t even meet one of the characters you unlock. There’s just a lot of text and they join you out of nowhere.
- Jarring cuts from cutscene FMV’s to in game graphics
- Limited selection of enemies
- Can’t switch targets when locked on
YET! I still really enjoyed playing it 😂
I love the aggressive negative comments from people who haven't even played it. Always makes me chuckle.
