Met Office forecasts sunshine and showers for North East this weekend ahead of 'unsettled' period

Forecasters have warned that ex-Hurricane Kirk could bring disruptive weather to the UK next week following a mix of sunny spells on Saturday and drizzle on Sunday

The North East can expected another mixed weekend of weather, with sunny spells to look forward to on Saturday before waterproofs may be needed on Sunday.

According to the latest forecast from the Met Office, Saturday (October 5) will be another "fine and dry day" across the region with lots of sunshine and highs of 15°C, although it will feel slightly breezier than it has over the past few days. Sunday (October 6), however, will see skies become increasingly cloudy with occasional outbreaks of drizzle, paving the way for an unsettled start to the week.

If you're wondering when the shortest day is as the nights set in earlier and earlier, there are still 11 weeks to go until the winter solstice falls on December 21 - by the end of the weekend, the sun will rise at 7.20am and set at 6.28pm. But there could be something to look forward to in the dark, with the potential for a Northern Lights display this weekend as huge solar flares hit Earth.

Looking ahead to next week, the early forecast predicts a mix of sunny spells and showers on Monday, with showers becoming heavy at times on Tuesday. The Met Office has warned that there is an "unsettled period" of weather on the horizon, with ex-Hurricane Kirk likely to reach north-west Europe from midweek and potentially bring disruptive weather to the UK.

Chris Bulmer, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Kirk over the North Atlantic will lose its status as a hurricane early next week before being swept towards northwest Europe. The resulting low pressure system will still have the potential to bring disruptive rain and winds to some areas, including parts of the UK, from the middle of next week."

He explained: "There remains much detail to work out on the exact track and timing of the system. Across the UK, parts of England and Wales look to have the greatest risk of heavy rain and strong winds during Wednesday and Thursday.

"However, a more southward track of this system, which is equally plausible at this stage, would see the most disruptive conditions impact France. The need for warnings will be kept under review over the coming days, so it's important to stay up to date with the latest forecast," Chris added.
