The A1 northbound carriageway was closed for hours in County Durham after a bin lorry fire caused major disruption. Just after 9.30am, it was reported that there was an obstruction between J62 A690 at Carrville and J63 A167 at Chester-le-Street.

The road was closed and traffic queued on the northbound side, with congestion in the other direction as onlookers slowed to view. County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and Durham Constabulary were both in attendance.

At the time, Durham Constabulary posted this on Facebook: "The A1(M) Northbound at Junction 62 Carrville is currently closed due to a bin lorry fire. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route."

The incident saw three fire engines at the scene, with firefighters wearing breathing apparatus putting out the fire using two hose reels. Crews then left the scene, with all lanes re-opening and traffic soon returning to normal.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 9.16am today (October 4) to a vehicle fire on the A1 northbound between Carrville and Chester-le-Street.

"Three fire engines from Durham, High Handenhold and Spennymoor fire stations attended the scene.

"Police closed both carriageways while Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA) put out the fire using two hose reels. Crews have now left the scene."

The fire caused disruption for around two hours.
