Met Office issues 11-hour wind warning for parts of the North East with gusts of 60mph forecast
by Catherine Addison-Swan · ChronicleLiveA wind warning has been issued for parts of the North East on Wednesday, with gusts of 50 to 60mph expected to hit parts of the region.
The Met Office has put an 11-hour yellow warning in place from 3am until 2pm on Wednesday which covers the west of the region, from part of Northumberland down to County Durham and encompassing a section of Gateshead. Forecasters have warned that some transport could be affected by the weather, with the potential for delays to road, rail and air services.
There is a chance that some bus and train services may be impacted, the warning adds, and delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are also likely. The Met Office elaborated: "West to south-westerly winds will become particularly gusty over and to the east/north-east of hills late Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
"Gusts of 50-60mph are possible in some areas, and potentially higher in more exposed places. This may cause difficult travelling conditions, especially on higher level and north-south routes," forecasters added.
The latest weather forecast for the North East predicts that the region will see outbreaks of heavy rain overnight on Tuesday, with temperatures remaining mild for the time of year with lows of 5°C. Wednesday is expected to get off to a "cloudy, damp and windy" start, but will grow brighter from the west as the day progresses, according to the Met Office, with highs of 13°C.
The early outlook for the end of the week and into the weekend forecasts that it will remain windy throughout this period, with Thursday looking cold and bright with "isolated wintry showers" possible on the hills. Friday and Saturday are expected to be milder, but dampened by further bouts of rain.
Earlier this month, the Met Office played down hopes of a White Christmas this year, although forecasters admitted that "nothing can be ruled out". The current UK-wide forecast says that Christmas week will start off with blustery showers, bringing "a mix of rain, sleet, some hill snow and soft hail" to many parts of the country as temperatures drop once again.
